Salford Prevent Conference

Welcome to Salford’s Prevent Conference.

This conference is aimed at giving you more information and guidance about what Prevent is, how Salford City Council and partners are preventing vulnerable people from being drawn into terrorism and the role you play in supporting this. By the end of the day, we hope you will have understood the amazing projects that are going on in Salford around Prevent and how you can be a part of this. Don’t worry if you aren’t from Salford, the information you will gain will be relevant across other local areas and details of your local Prevent team can be provided.

How the Day Will Run:

This year, the conference will run online, with sessions over Teams. Once you have booked through Eventbrite, the links you will follow to attend the sessions will be sent to you 48 hours before the event.

In the morning, we will all come together for an introductory session and listen to a panel of speakers, including the Home Office, Counter Terrorism Policing, Department for Education, the NHS, Small Steps and Oasis Academy, to talk about why Prevent is so important.

In the afternoon, you will be able to choose from a number of workshops those that are most relevant to you and your organisation. A description of the workshops available can be found at the bottom of this page, and you will be able to pick three when you book.

At the end of the day, we will all come together again for a debrief session where you have the opportunity to ask any further questions you may have and let us know how we can support you further.

Educate Against Hate

Educate Against Hate is a website designed for school leaders, teachers and parents. Developed by the Department for Education and the Home Office, it is full of government advice and trusted resources for schools to safeguard students from radicalisation. This workshop is designed to showcase what is available to ensure that you can get the best out of the website, wherever you work and whatever you need.

Businesses and Prevent

This workshop enables businesses to understand what their Prevent duty is, including looking at aspects such as good policy and practice for venue hire, identifying how and when to put in a Prevent referral and best practice IT policy.

Small Steps

Small Steps training is delivered by former members of the Far Right, it offers workers in depth training to spot the signs of radicalisation and raise awareness of the Far Right’s recruitment strategies and online influence.

Counter Terrorism Police Briefing

This briefing will give an overview of the current risk of radical groups throughout Greater Manchester and what you need to do if you are worried someone is being drawn into terrorism. Following this will be information about what Prevent does to reduce this risk and support vulnerable individuals from being radicalised.

Odd Arts

Odd Arts is a Manchester based charity who specialise in delivering theatre-based programmes to challenge and change attitudes and behaviours. In this workshop, Odd Arts will take you through practical examples of how they have worked with communities and young people to reduce violence, support mental health and promote healthy relationships.

‘What’s Your Beef’ Conflict Resolution Pack

The Conflict Resolution Pack is specifically designed for ages 11 – 16, which can be done in schools, 1-1 and in youth groups. The pack has been formulated to be adaptable for young people who may have additional needs and looks at all forms of vulnerability and grooming, including into radicalisation, knife crime and CCE.

Split up into various sessions, the pack looks at:

• what conflict is,

• how young people could be groomed into conflict,

• the impacts of conflict on self and community,

• how young people can get out of conflict.

Mental Health and Prevent

This workshop will look at the ways in which mental health has an impact on an individual’s vulnerability to radicalisation and how to recognise and respond to this effectively.

Hate Crime Briefing

This briefing will be run by Salford’s hate crime lead and the GMP Victims’ Services coordinator. It will look at what hate crimes are, what hate incidents are and what affect they have on the individual and their community. Information will be shared on how hate crimes relate to the Counter Terrorism agenda, how to report hate crimes and what support is available for victims and witnesses.
