About this event

Sixty years ago, the Space Race gave the world an ambitious goal to aim for. When it began, nobody knew how to land a man on the moon, but we knew that we had some of the technology and knowledge at our disposal, and we believed that we had the collective will and ingenuity that would take us all of the way.

To an extent, the same principle applies to our current climate change challenge. This is #OurSpaceRace. A Space Race for the 21st Century. We must address all emissions, from all sectors and drive our emissions down to #NetZero.

How we do that is far from clear. The wholesale decarbonisation of a city, let alone a country, has never been done before and the challenge is quite simply enormous.

But #Newcastle is a city of knowledge, and of progress, and of action – And so Newcastle City Council, Newcastle University and Northumbria University invite you to join our first Student Climate Change Summit and compete for the first Net Zero Innovation Challenge prizes.

Together we will consider how to tackle the climate emergency and make the most of the huge opportunities it brings, both by changing our communities for the better and seeking to take the lead in efforts to decarbonise the globe.

We hope you will join us.

Newcastle Student Climate Change Conference

The Newcastle Student Climate Change Conference takes place on Monday March 1 2021, from 9.30am to 12.30pm.

The event is open to all students and there will be an opportunity to ask questions and contribute to the debate.

Key speakers will discuss:

• Newcastle’s Net Zero Action Plan and citywide commitments for action

• How every action helps

• Future careers in the green economy

Net Zero Student Innovation Challenge

A five day challenge, from March 1 to 5 2021, the Net Zero Student Innovation Challenge invites students of Newcastle and Northumbria Universities to showcase their critical thinking and share ideas with city and university leaders on one of four topics:

  • Low carbon campuses - How can student accommodation and university campuses reduce their carbon emissions?
  • Low carbon lifestyles - How can we increase individual sustainable action across all age groups?
  • Low carbon travel - How can we reduce emissions from transport and reduce private car ownership?
  • Working together for a net zero future - How can we engage all parts of society on climate change issues and encourage net zero action across all parts of society.

Interdisciplinary teams will be created from all individual entrants, with groups taking on the role of a consultancy firm to develop and present – with input from business and industry experts - bold ideas that have the potential for meaningful impact and that can be successfully implemented in Newcastle.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams:

1st Prize £400.00

2nd Prize £200.00

3rd Prize £150.00

Please note:

  • Registration for the Summit is a prerequisite of participation in the Net Zero Innovation Challenge.
  • Students will be allocated to teams and group registration is not available.
