Help refugees take back control of their lives through social enterprise and support the first-ever homestore for refugee artisans.

by UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency in London, England, United Kingdom

Calling ethical shoppers and humanitarians! Help launch a world-first homestore to help refugee artisans.

We are calling for support to realise the world's first homestore entirely dedicated to products crafted by refugees. It is set to offer stunning homewares, fashion and accessories, supporting displaced communities across the globe.

Your pledge will go directly to refugee artisans and their cooperatives – helping them buy materials and scale up production to make this new enterprise a reality and launch a pop-up homestore to showcase their stunning crafts. Many remain displaced, often still in refugee camps, and need our support.

Receive a beautifully, handcrafted thank you gift in return.

This exciting new venture comes from the UN Refugee Agency’s global initiative, MADE51, which supports refugee artisans by linking them with international markets so they can earn an income and build brighter futures. All partnered with the World Fair Trade Organisation.

With your support, the pop-up aims to launch in London in early 2020. All profits will be reinvested to help more refugees start earning income through their craft, supported by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR).

Please pledge now to help the artisans get started.

Support Refugee Artisans like Francine

"I fled the war of bullets but now I face the battle of life.”

At 25 years old, Francine ran for her life to escape horrific violence in Burundi. She is now in a refugee camp and joined a women’s cooperative that weaves beautiful, coloured baskets. It has helped her regain her confidence and independence.

“My life is stable today, I love the teamwork, courage and spirit of the cooperative."

Every pledge will help refugees like Francine buy materials, produce new craftware and build a brighter future.

What do MADE51 refugee artisans make?

From fine Syrian embroidery and delicate Myanmar jewellery, to the leatherworking of Burkina Faso – the MADE51 collection offers beautifully crafted home decor and accessories that merge contemporary design with traditional skills. Choose your reward and support a refugee today.

Why the name MADE51?

The word ‘MADE’ evokes the spirit of creation and the handmade nature of the artisanal goods that refugees are handcrafting. It also forms an acronym, “Market Access, Design and Empowerment”.

The ‘51’ acknowledges the 1951 Refugee Convention, which enshrines the right of all men, women and children fleeing conflict to seek protection.

Learn more about MADE51

MADE51 is shopping with a purpose – stunning art, homewares, craft and jewellery that empower their refugee makers to rebuild their lives in dignity.

Refugees are often trapped in indefinite limbo, losing their sense of freedom to work, play and live. MADE51 gives refugees an opportunity to earn an income through meaningful work. We strive to create sustainable business opportunities for refugees by involving them in the global artisan value chain. It is also a powerful way to help displaced families keep their cultural traditions alive.

To ensure the highest ethical standards for all artisans and their products, we work in partnership with the World Fair Trade Organisation.

When refugees participate in the global artisan value chain they can express their artistic traditions, preserve their cultural heritage, learn transferable business and vocational skills and restore their sense of dignity and self-determination. They also earn an income which reduces their dependency on aid and improves their self-reliance.

MADE51 was established by the UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. It is a collaborative initiative: Strategic partners are helping build the operations model, curate the collection and present it to global audiences.

To bring the pop-up store to London, we are collaborating with Artisan & Fox.

FAQs

I have a query, who should I contact?

For all queries regarding the MADE51 campaign, donations or rewards, please contact [email protected].

Do I need to pay a delivery fee for my reward?

For orders to UK addresses, delivery fees are included within the donation amounts.

For orders to overseas addresses, donors are required to pay an additional £20 international shipping fee for each reward.

Where will the MADE51 pop up shop be?

The pop up shop will be in Chelsea, London, in a beautiful space which has been kindly donated to us free of charge.

Where will my donation go and how will it be used?

All donations received via this crowdfunding campaign will be collected by our strategic partner Artisan and Fox (acting as agent of MADE51 and the UNHCR).

Once the crowdfunding campaign has closed, Artisan and Fox will use the donations received as follows:

1.    if you have selected a reward, then:

     a.    part of your donation will be used to fund the manufacture of the item you have selected; and

     b.    part of your donation will be used to fund the manufacture of additional stock for the pop-up homestore launching in London this autumn.

2.    if you have not selected a reward then the entirety of your donation will be used to fund the manufacture of additional stock for the pop-up homestore launching in London this autumn.

In each case, the donation proceeds will ultimately be transferred to the refugees who have made your reward or the additional stock for the homestore, via the MADE51 network of local social enterprises.

What will the additional stock be used for?

The additional MADE51 stock funded by your donation (see 'Where will my donation go and how will it be used?' above for more information) will be made available for sale in our pop-up homestore launching in London this autumn. The store will be operated by our strategic partner Artisan and Fox (acting as agent of MADE51 and the UNHCR) who will take a sales commission to cover operating and other expenses incurred in running and promoting the pop-up. Any profits generated by the store (once sales commission and operating costs have been deducted) will be reinvested in the MADE51 initiative, thereby helping more refugees to start earning income through their craft, supported by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR).

Will my data be shared with anyone?

We’ll share your information with our strategic partner Artisan and Fox so they can keep you up-to-date with production and delivery of your reward (if applicable).
