About me

Hi, I'm Maya Tomse, Psychologist, Psychotherapist, and Couples Counsellor specialising in relationships and complex life transitions, working solely online. With personal experiences shaped by war and living in different countries, I bring a unique perspective to my work.

Whether you're a couple or an individual, the quality of your relationships often determines your well-being and for most people their relationships are the main reason for seeking out therapy. I've come to believe that helping people in therapy means to help them create the relationships and lives they want and I feel privileged to play a part in this challenging process.

Training, qualifications & experience

Training and qualifications

I received my undergraduate degree in B.Sc. in Psychology from The University of Ljubljana (Slovenia). My research focused on work related stress and burnout which was later completed at The Gothenburg University (Sweden).

Also, I hold M.A.in Psychotherapy and Counselling from The University of Edinburgh (UK). My thesis involved studying one of the most important relationships there is - the relationship between mother and child.

Through the M.A. research I become fascinated with early relationships and attachment styles and how these formed our behaviours and relationships in adulthood which then led to completing Specialisation in Couples Counselling (Relationship Scotland, UK).

In recent years I have been extensively researching one of the areas that has not received much attention within the psychotherapy world - ADHD, dyslexia, dyscalculia and dysgraphia. My focus lies not only how having these learning difficulties affects us emotionally and socially but also how they affects those around us.

Theoretical orientation

My work methodology embraces integration by combining diverse tools and techniques tailored to each individual or couple's needs. I employ the powerful synergy of Psychodynamic and Emotion-focused theories, fostering the understanding and expression of present emotions while linking them to past experiences and unmet needs.

At the heart of my approach lies the belief in the Person-Centred theory, affirming that every individual possesses the innate capacity to uncover answers and solutions when provided with an opportunity and a willingness to embrace change.

By utilising Family Systems theory, I assist clients in comprehending the intricate dynamics within their relationships, encompassing the contextual backdrop, established rules, boundaries, and effective communication.

Furthermore, I employ Solution-focused techniques to heighten the therapeutic focus when necessary, along with Educational methods that impart knowledge about common relationship challenges and stressors stemming from life's natural transitions.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Other areas of counselling I deal with

Learning difficulties (dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia, ADHD) is one of the areas in counselling that I have been extensively researching in the past couples of years.

Researchers have been trying to assess the effects of learning difficulties on the individual for over 50 years and there seems to be a consensus that learning difficulties are profoundly affecting individual's learning experience throughout life.

My focus lies on how having learning difficulties is affecting us emotionally and socially. This area has been, sadly,  less researched. Everyone suffers from emotional difficulties at some point in life, however, life changing events combined with the inevitable intense emotions that accompany them can cause real confusion and distress for a person with learning difficulties. People can experience stress, lack of confidence and low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, sadness, panic attacks or anger.

I hope that, with the knowledge that I have gathered on this topic and my own personal experience, I can now offer a safe space to those who want to explore how these difficulties affect them and their loved ones.
