Information and Research Lead - Law - New York or New Jersey

As a result of considerable growth in the Americas, a leading global law firm has a requirement for an experienced information professional to assume a lead role within the Knowledge, Information and Research function in either New York or New Jersey. This is a new role within the firm as it seeks to establish and grow their US based KM/Information function, and initial objectives of the position will be to bring formality to the management and procurement of information resources and vendor relationships, to bring structure to legal and business research requests from attorneys, and to establish processes and project needs such as the implementation of current awareness bulletins. Suitable applicants will likely be experienced information professionals seeking a step up to a more senior role and those that can operate with considerable autonomy

The key objectives and responsibilities of the role include, but are not limited to:

  • Review information resources available within the firm, establish relationships with information vendors and control associated costs/budgets
  • Provide a business and legal research service to attorneys in the short-term
  • Establish a self-service culture around research and to educate attorneys on research methods, process and available resources
  • To establish relationships with key stakeholders across the firms US based offices and to drive engagement with the Research and Information function
  • Working closely with the wider Knowledge Management function which is led from London and encompasses teams that also cover APAC and LATAM
  • To establish the requirements and needs of stakeholders and to formalise a plan for formalisation and for future growth

Suitable applicants for this role will need the following experience and skills:

  • An experienced information professional within a legal setting, ideally Library Science qualified
  • This role would suit someone who has led a similar function, but equally, someone seeking an opportunity to move up would be a strong applicant
  • An ability and a willingness to work with considerable autonomy and with colleagues that are geographically dispersed across the globe
  • Considerable experience in managing suppliers of information resources including relationship building and managing/negotiation of costs
  • Highly developed research skills for business and legal enquiries from Attorneys
  • The ability to drive the training and culture management associated with developing a self-service culture around research
  • High level stakeholder engagement and relationship building skills
  • The ability to plan and execute on projects that support formalisation and growth
