Haiti’s cholera treatment centres are overwhelmed as cases surge

Treatment centres in Haiti are being overwhelmed by the continued spread of cholera, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has warned.

The first case of a new outbreak of the bacterial disease was detected in Port-Au-Prince on 29 September and health authorities and medical non-governmental organisations have struggled to contain its spread amid spiralling gang violence.

“Our centres are filling up and we will soon be at maximum capacity,” warned Mumuza Muhindo, MSF’s country director in Haiti, in a statement.

The organisation said that there was an immediate need for more financial donations, doctors, and vaccines to prevent more unnecessary deaths.
