Abstract Submission now open for Hot Topics 2021!

Deadline to submit: 7th June 2021

We are now accepting abstract submissions for our “Hot Topic” conference sessions. A “Hot Topic” is anything you deem to be a current “hot” subject, theme or issue.

To submit your  symposia abstract please fill in the below form and email to conference@bera.ac.uk.

The deadline to submit is 7th June 2021. The abstract can be a maximum of 600 words. The selected “Hot Topics” will be announced 10th June 2021.

PLEASE READ ALL THE INFORMATION BELOW BEFORE SUBMITTING AN ABSTRACT

Symposia

Virtual Conference information:
Accepted symposium will be automatically pre-selected as a live session. However, you have the option to select to be a pre-recorded on demand sessions.

Submission information:
750 word abstract of the symposium, and must include the title and a paragraph about each paper in the symposium. There is an additional 250 words for references. Example of structure for Symposium. The symposium as a whole must have a clear focus and each paper therein must be clearly related to the overall focus/theme of the symposium but also offer distinct perspectives. Symposiums are 90 mins long and consist of more than one paper on a related theme. There is no limit to the number of papers in a symposium, but you are restricted by time.

If your abstract does not include a paragraph under the title of each paper, this may be reviewed as an individual abstract. 

Please also ensure your symposium is anonymous. Your abstract may be edited to anonymise for the reviewing process and if successful can then edited to include presenters for each paper.

Reviewing criteria:

  • Clarity of the focus of the research
  • Originality of the symposium proposal
  • Rigour and coherence of the symposium and its individual papers
  • Significance of the research for education practice, policy or theory

Individual Papers

Virtual Conference information:
Accepted individual papers will be automatically pre-selected as a pre-recorded, on demand session. You will also be allocated a time slot to be available for ‘live’ Q&A for your presentation. However, you have the option to select to be a live session with other relevant individual papers that the CEC will put together.

Submission information:
750 word abstract with an additional 250 words for references.

Option to specify Student, New Researcher, Post-doctoral Researcher, Teacher/Practitioner Researcher Papers.

Digital Posters

Virtual Conference information:
Accepted posters will be uploaded to the platform. You will also be allocated a time slot to be available for ‘live’ Q&A for your presentation.

Submission information:
750 word abstract with an additional 250 words for references.

Reviewing criteria:

  • Clarity of the focus of the research
  • Suitability of the format
  • Rigour of the research
  • Significance of the proposal for practice, policy or theory

Workshops

Virtual Conference information:
Accepted workshops will be live sessions and limited with participation numbers.

Submission information:
750 word abstract with an additional 250 words for references. These must be highly participatory sessions that need audience interaction. Abstracts must include how these will be different than one of the other submission types.

  • Suitability of the session format
  • Rigour of the research
  • Significance of the proposal for practice, policy or theory

Themes

All submissions should indicate the theme which closely relates to the topic when submitting.  BERA reserves the right to reassign your abstract to a different theme than submitted if more relevant for programming purposes. If your paper abstract does not fall within the remits of the listed themes, please email conference@bera.ac.uk and you will be given instructions how to submit.

Bursaries and awards

There are various bursaries and awards available at the conference.

Student Bursary – Deadline 19th April 2021
Successful bursary applicants will be awarded a complimentary place at the BERA Annual Conference. Full and part time students are eligible to apply. Students must have an accepted abstract for the conference, be a BERA Member and not have previously received support from BERA.

Teacher/Practitioner/Independent Researchers Bursary – Deadline 19th April 2021
Successful bursary applicants will be awarded a complimentary place at the BERA Annual Conference. All applicants must have an accepted abstract for the conference, be a BERA Member and not have previously received support from BERA.

Delegate choice award – Deadline 11th October 2021
There will be an opportunity during the conference to vote for your favourite presentation. The presentation with the most votes will be awarded the delegate choice award. More information coming soon.

Abstract reviewing

Each abstract is reviewed blindly by two reviewers drawn from members of the Special Interest Groups and the BERA Committees.

All BERA members will have the opportunity to peer review the abstracts submitted. If you would like to be added to the database please click here.
