Editorial Reviews
Santana – Blessings and Miracles On Blessings and Miracles, music legend and guitar master Carlos Santana delivers one of the most ambitious, inspired and flat-out magical records of his storied career. There’s thrilling feats of bravura musicianship that pair the guitar master with fellow icons like Chick Corea and Steve Winwood, knockout rockers with Metallica’s Kirk Hammett and Living Colour’s Corey Glover, and genre-bending, hook-filled celebrations featuring Rob Thomas, Chris Stapleton, G-Eazy, American Authors and Ally Brooke, among others. The album’s first single, “Move,” is the long-awaited reteaming of Santana and Matchbox 20 vocalist Rob Thomas, and it’s a sensation. Thomas is dynamic and magnetic, and he’s ably backed by the punchy vocal talents of American Authors (especially the band’s Zac Barnett, who takes the lead spot in the second verse). Santana matches these supreme performances as only he can, with scintillating solos that explode with tectonic force. On the second single, “She’s Fire,” a hypnotically soulful ballad that works its way into your body chemistry, Santana wraps his exquisite guitar melodies in and around an enticing narrative spun by the rapper G-Eazy – collaboration as conversation, and truly riveting. Santana partnered with country titan Chris Stapleton on “Joy,” a soul-enriching marvel that blends country, reggae, blues and gospel with a widescreen sing-along chorus. And on “America for Sale,” a gnashing, metal-blues bruiser, the guitarist is joined by Death Angel singer Marc Osegueda and Metallica axeman Kirk Hammett. Anybody expecting hair-raising guitar voodoo won’t be disappointed. Santana immersed himself in the creation of Blessings and Miracles over a two-year period, serving as producer and collaborating with record makers and writers such as Diane Warren, Narada Michael Walden, Chris Stapleton, Peter Stengaard and Gregg Wattenberg. It’s an album full of revelations and epiphanies – through songs guaranteed to light up both radio playlists and concert stages. Recorded before his stroke (man, are we ALL getting this old?) , the new Santana album is a mix of both vocal and instrumental songs.
As a maestro of the guitar, Carlos is probably our second best living rock guitarist; only beaten out by Jeff Beck. He plays with a combination of majesty and emotion. He sings for the kings, yet he cries for the pauper. He doesn’t sing himself. He has friends come in to do that for him. But on the guitar, Santana is literally blazing and crying on this album. He soars to the heavens and reaches deep into the soul.
He doesn’t stick with one particular song type. He plays his noteworthy Afro-Latin soul, but also plays for hip hop, for straight ahead rock, even for gospel. He has stripped away all of the musical boundaries. There are no walls that contain him.
Of note is his cover of “A Whiter Shade of Pale” in that it brings together three giants of the 1960s. The song is written by Gary Brooker of Procol Harum, is sung by Traffic’s Steve Winwood and has amazingly emotional solos by Santana.
Every fan of the guitar MUST have this record.

The song "Santana Celebration" comes closest, perhaps, to the classic Santana sound before it delves into Dream Theater territory. "Rumbalero" takes the sound somewhat into Afro-Latin sounds before becoming a wall of too many instruments vying for attention. Procol Harum's "Whiter Shade of Pale" still hasn't been improved upon. "America for Sale"—no thanks. "Mother Yes" sounds like a Cream B-side. "Angel Choir/All Together" is my favorite of these 15 tracks but way too short, with "Ghost of Future Pull II" a close second and, unfortunately, even shorter.
Overall, the list of guest artists on this album tells me "Blessings and Miracles" is trying to appeal more to the fans of all those musicians than to those who love Santana's own sound.
