MPD makes changes to college requirements for recruits

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Memphis Police Department changed some of the qualifications needed to become a police officer.

According to JoinMPD.com, recruits must pass a wide range of tests that include background checks, an obstacle course, a written exam, and weeks of training at Memphis Police Academy.

Those tests happen once a recruit passes initial entry tests. To get to those tests a recruit must first meet certain qualifications.

Those qualifications include being 21-years-old, having a valid driver's license, having 2 years of cumulative active military service with a honorable discharge, and having an associate's degree or 54 semester hours of college.

Now the department has changed the college requirements. Now a recruit can have 5 years of full-time responsible, verifiable work experience and a high school diploma. If a recruit is hired under that qualification, he/she must obtain an associate degree within four years of employment.
