By focusing on a community’s strengths instead of its weaknesses, the process of asset mapping provides researchers with a new way to assess community health. This process is also a useful tool for assessing health-related needs, disparities, and inequities within the communities. This paper aims to serve as a basic and surface level guide to understanding, planning, and creating an asset map. A step-by-step guideline is provided in this paper as an introduction to those interested in creating an asset map using organizational outlines and previous application in research projects. To help readers better grasp asset maps, a few examples are first provided that show the application of asset maps in health research, community engagement, and community partnerships. This is followed by elaboration of the six steps involved in the creation of an asset map. This paper introduces researchers to the steps required to create an asset map, with examples from the published literature. The intended audience includes students and researchers new to the creation of asset maps.
Community asset mapping can be a crucial component for forging meaningful and useful partnerships between health systems and communities. This chapter describes the history and specifications of select asset-‐based mapping methodologies, existing mapping tools, as well as their potential integration into the federally mandated Community Health Needs Assessments (CHNAs). The potential use of mapping findings to build, nurture and enhance community health improvement efforts will be explored, as well as key strategies and considerations in use of these processes. Lastly, case studies are used to illustrate how asset mapping can be leveraged to build meaningful clinical-‐community partnerships with health systems.

Mapping the interrelationships between community assets2020 •
PurposeCommunity asset mapping (CAM) is an evidence-based activity commonly used in local socioeconomic development initiatives. Residents and other stakeholders collaboratively identify the resources that they deem most important to the vitality of their community. Results are depicted qualitatively using maps. While maps are a useful means to convey information, alternate approaches to summarize data drawn from CAM activities may yield additional inferences that better inform community development initiatives.Design/methodology/approachThis study conducted a retrospective analysis of secondary, de-identified data collected from the 2015–2016 Gonzaga University Logan Neighborhood Asset Mapping Project. Hierarchical and nonhierarchical cluster analyses were used to establish interrelationships between the perceived importance of various community assets.FindingsThe hierarchical cluster analysis revealed a very intuitive hierarchical clustering of community assets, with various healt...

This literature review is a discussion of asset-based approaches to community engagement. Following a literature search, we identified several asset mapping approaches: asset-based community development (ABCD); participatory inquiry into religious health assets, networks and agency (PIRHANA); community health assets mapping for partnerships (CHAMP); the sustainable livelihoods approach (SLA); Planning for Real®; and approaches using geographic information systems (GIS).

Dimensions of Community Assets for Health. A Systematised Review and Meta-SynthesisSince Aaron Antonovsky’s salutogenesis theory and Morgan and Ziglio’s health assets model were first proposed, there has been a growing concern to define the resources available to the individual and the community to maintain or improve health and well-being. The aim of the present study was to identify the dimensions that characterise community assets for health. To this end, we conducted a systematised review with a meta-synthesis and content analysis of research or projects involving asset mapping in the community. Articles that met our eligibility criteria were: (1) based on the salutogenic approach and (2) described an assets mapping process and among their results, explained what, how and why particular community assets for health had been selected. The search included primary studies in the published and grey literature which were selected from websites and electronic databases (Web of Science, MEDLINE, Scopus, EBSCOhost, Dialnet, SciELO). Of the 607 records examined by a sin...

A scoping review of community health needs and assets assessment: concepts, rationale, tools and usesBackground Community health needs and assets assessment is a means of identifying and describing community health needs and resources, serving as a mechanism to gain the necessary information to make informed choices about community health. The current review of the literature was performed in order to shed more light on concepts, rationale, tools and uses of community health needs and assets assessment. Methods We conducted a scoping review of the literature published in English using PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, PDQ evidence, NIH database, Cochrane library, CDC library, Trip, and Global Health Library databases until March 2021. Results A total of 169 articles including both empirical papers and theoretical and conceptual work were ultimately retained for analysis. Relevant concepts were examined guided by a conceptual framework. The empirical papers were dominantly conducted in the United States. Qualitative, quantitative and mixed-method approaches were used to colle...

A systematic scoping review of asset-based approaches to promote health in communities: development of a framework2019 •
Asset-based approaches to health promotion have become increasingly popular as a way to tackle health inequalities by empowering people in more disadvantaged communities to use local resources and increase control over health and its determinants. However, questions remain about how they work in practice. This article presents the findings from a systematic scoping review of the empirical literature on asset-based approaches in communities. The aim was to identify the key elements of asset-based approaches, and how they are operationalised in interventions aimed at promoting health and reducing inequalities in local communities. Four databases were searched (Medline, PsycINFO, CINAHL, ASSIA) and papers were included if they described interventions explicitly adopting an asset-based approach but excluded if limited to asset identification. Thirty articles were included in the review. Data were extracted on the type of assets that the intervention built upon, how assets were mobilised...

Philosophical Assumptions, Utility and Challenges of Asset Mapping Approaches to Community Engagement2012 •
This working paper critically reviews some main aspects from asset based approaches highlights key strengths and weaknesses for future research/development. Drawing on a large body of reports and relevant literature we draw on different theoretical traditions and critiques, as well as practices and processes embedded within a broad range of approaches including, widely acknowledged frameworks such Asset Based Community Development (ABCD), Appreciative Inquiry (AI), Sustainable Livelihood Approaches (SLA) and Community Capitals Framework (CCF). Although these are presented as distinct approaches, there is a sense of evolution through them and many of them overlap (in terms of both theories and methodologies). We also include emerging frameworks, including geographical, socio-spatial, visual and creative approaches, stemming from a number of projects within AHRC’s Connected Communities programme and additional collaborations. Our primarily objective have been to collate and compare insights relating to: the theoretical premise of asset based approaches the types of assets captured by existing approaches, and the processes/approaches to ‘mapping’ they deploy the contextual conditions that asset based approaches seek to address the strengths and weakness of specific approaches for supporting not only incremental and smaller scale changes, but also, for creating the conditions to support wider, or systemic issues and problems Insights from the approaches, methods and case studies we provided, suggest that asset-based approaches within communities may help generating a “reinforcing cycle” that builds on cultural recognition, social networks as well as routes to solidarity, collaboration and collective visioning or action. While we have pointed to aspects of creative engagement and the possibilities they open to micro-civic acts and cycles of symbolic recognition and self-organisation, we have also highlighted challenges stemming from essentialist premises, and stressed and importance of considering community capacity building frameworks in relation to wider systemic and societal contexts. Insights from research and practice also warn against specific assumptions concerning ‘community’ lacking a deep understanding of conflict, competition and controversy. Asset mapping approaches must therefore acknowledge the dialectical connections between collaborative forces and self-serving interests in communities, addressing these tensions both from a sociological, cultural and geographic framework.

Health has always been a priority for rural people, but expectations of what improved health might bring to both individuals and communities is greater than it ever has been before. Accompanying the expectations of better health is a high price tag and seemingly shrinking pool of resources to accomplish the task at hand. Community Health Mapping (CHM) is an innovative and cost effective health program that builds on established social networks in rural communities. The CHM program assists rural populations in identifying their health care priorities and mapping out a plan for achieving them. In this paper, we provide (1) a background of the need in rural Illinois for grassroots initiated rural health care programs, (2) present an overview of the program and explore its collaborative nature, and (3) discuss some of the long term benefits to communities participating in the program.
