An activist who claimed that black lives are not treated as a priority in modern Britain has been elected president of the National Union of Students.

Larissa Kennedy will be in the role for the next two years, taking the union into its 100th year in 2022. Most recently a University of Warwick student, she has been an active NUS member since the age of 16.

In recent comments on Twitter, Ms Kennedy said less attention was paid to black lives and pain.

She was writing after the death of Kayla Williams, a 36-year-old Londoner who rang for an ambulance suffering from coronavirus symptoms, but was told to look after herself at home.
