The role played by technology and connectivity during the Covid-19 pandemic can’t have escaped anyone – whether you’ve been working remotely or staying in touch with family and friends over Zoom these past few months. Crucially, their most significant role in the crisis could still be to come. Delivering faster, more reliable and economic connectivity through wireless networks could significantly shape how the economy bounces back from the effects of Covid-19, supporting communities, businesses and public services as they adapt to a ‘new normal’. Every sector will approach recovery in a different way. However, the combination of 5G connectivity and digitalization will create new opportunities and productivity gains. For example schools, universities, galleries and museums will be able to create immersive blended experience models for access and learning. In the health sector, virtual consultations have been widely adopted and have the opportunity to evolve much further. That said, it cannot happen overnight. For 5G to plays its role, we need to provide a catalyst to enable collaboration between entrepreneurs, SMEs and industry. The Scotland 5G Centre is planning to create a network of digital hubs across the country that will provide a platform to enable innovation, leading to new products, processes and adoption of these services at scale - aiding economic recovery. For the Scotland 5G Centre, this means establishing partnerships to help everyone make the most of the transformational potential of 5G. We believe Scotland is the ideal place for developing applications and showcasing what is possible anywhere, helping to set out a path for the recovery ahead.
