We can help you secure an internship or placement during your studies

A placement is an opportunity to gain valuable work experience as a part of your degree. The placement options that are available to you will depend on the course you study, however, many courses at MDX will allow you to complete a year-long placement where you can immerse yourself in a relevant role.

We can help you find and secure a placement through 1:1 support. Book an appointment online or email our MDXworks team.

  • Already found a placement?

Before we can approve the placement please complete the relevant link below and wait for our team to give you more details on the necessary documents we require:

  • FAQs about placements (all schools)

    • Can I work self-employed?

You generally wouldn’t be able to be self-employed as you need to be assessed by your supervisor in order to pass the placement module. The Placement Administrator will confirm this during the approval process.

Please note if you have a Student route (formerly tier 4) visa you are not allowed to work as a freelancer/self employed.

    • Can I do my placement in overseas/in my home country, what paperwork do I need to upload?

You can do a placement overseas but please complete the Placement Details Form first. Some of the other paperwork such as the insurance documents might not be needed. Please also note that you might need a visa to work in a different country and also take out travel insurance to cover yourself. If you working in your home country you will not need insurance.

    • Is my placement suitable?

Our Placement Administrator will work with our Faculty Adviser and Module Leader to assess whether your placement is suitable for you and your course.

    • I don’t understand the question ‘Which module do you want to replace?’

In order for you to be added to the relevant placement module you must drop another of your taught modules and we have to alert Student Records which one that is.

    • What do I write for the module code?

Please contact our Placement Administrator who can add the module in the form for you.

    • I've submitted my placement details form, do you need anything else?

You will also need to upload a job description and insurance documents along with the WP1 form that your employer needs to complete and give to you.

Our Placement Administrator will be in touch to let you know if we need any further information.

    • I've submitted my placement details form, but not heard back yet. Can I start my placement?

You cannot start your placement until you have confirmation from the Placement Administrator.

    • I haven’t be assigned a supervisor for my placement, what shall I do?

You need to contact your Module Leader who will assign a supervisor for you.

    • Where do I get the WP1 form from?

This will be emailed to your employer directly but if you need a copy please contact the Placement Administrator.

    • Do I still need to complete the WP1 and WP3 forms even though my placement is remote?

Whilst you are working from home or online it won’t be needed. If you do go on site or travel at all, you will need to complete these forms and upload them, as well as having insurance covered by the employer or the university.

    • My employer only has employer liability certificates, is this acceptable?

It will be acceptable if you are not working with the public. If you are, then you will need to covered by your employers Public Liability insurance.

    • My employer doesn’t provide insurance what should I do?

Please let us know and we will add you to the Middlesex insurances if you are working in the UK.

    • Do I need to write a report about my placement?

Please refer to the module handbook or contact your module leader to see what assignments you need to complete for the placement module.

  • FAQs for Arts and Creative Industries placements

    • Can I do my placement at MDX?

These are currently not being offered at present.

    • Can I work for friends/family?

You can but you must complete all the relevant paperwork and let us know that you are working for someone you know.

    • Does freelancing count as a placement? & What insurances do I need for freelancing?

Freelancing would not count if you need to be assessed in some way by a supervisor. If you are using the experience as part of a case study or as evidence in an assignment then freelancing will be accepted. You will need all the usual insurances in place for any freelance work.

Please note if you are on a Student route (formerly tier 4) visa you are not allowed to work as a freelancer/self employed.

    • I did a placement last summer, does that count?

You can use work that you have already completed but it would need to classed as a case study rather than a placement.

    • Can I do my placement overseas?

You can do a placement overseas but please complete the Placement Details Form first. Some of the other paperwork such as the insurance documents might not be needed. Please also note that you might need a visa to work in a different country and also take out travel insurance to cover yourself

    • Is my placement suitable?

The Placement Administrator will approve it alongside the tutor but it will be the Administrator only who will let you know it has been approved.

    • I don’t understand the question ‘Which module do you want to replace?’

Some students need to be added to a placement module. If you are already on the relevant module then please put 'not applicable' to this question.

    • What if there isn’t a job description?

Please ask your employer to email us an outline of your duties so we can verify this is a suitable placement for you and to ensure we are aware of your duties in case your employer does not fulfil your requirements.

    • Do I have to take the Pre-Placement Module Media?

You have to complete the Placement Details Form in order for us to approve.

    • I’m confused about completing the WP3 form. What do I need to do?

Your employer will go over the health and safety procedures during your first week in placement and should complete the form with you.

    • Where do I get the WP1 form from?

This will be emailed to your employer directly but if you need a copy please contact the Placement Administrator.

    • If I’m working remotely / online, what insurances do I need from the company?

If you are working at home, then you do not need insurance in place. If you are visiting your employer at any point to work, you will need to have insurance (either from the employer or from the University if they don’t have insurance cover for you).

    • Do I need to write a report about the placement for assessment?

Please refer to the module handbook or the module leader for advice on any assignments.

    • Is there anything I need to do differently with regards to COVID-19?

Your employer will receive a WP1 form once you fill in the Placement Details Form. It includes important COVID-19 related health and safety documents that we need in order to ensure your safety. This might not be relevant if you are working remotely.
