Subregional workshop under the UNECE projects on improving mining/tailings safety in Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and beyond in Central Asia

20 November (10:00) - 21 November (18:00) 2019
Almaty Kazakhstan

The objective of the workshop is to present the final results of the tailings project in Kazakhstan, implemented since 2018 and finishing at the end of the year. The subregional workshop will also provide an opportunity for Tajikistan to share the interim results of the on-going tailings project in Tajikistan (2019-2020) and to exchange experiences with other Central Asian countries which will attend the workshop. Other international organizations and partners, including from the region, will also participate. The subregional workshop will be preceded by a regional consultation for Central Asia on a draft mine tailings standard (Almaty, Kazakhstan, 18-19 November 2019), co-convened by the Global Tailings Review and the secretariat to the UNECE Convention on the Transboundary Effects of Industrial Accidents.

The subregional workshop is implemented as part of the UNECE project on strengthening mining operations, in particular of tailings management facilities (TMFs) in Kazakhstan (2018-2019) and a similar project implemented in Tajikistan (2019-2020). The projects are financed by the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment under the Assistance and Cooperation Programme of the UNECE Industrial Accidents Convention.
