Renewable transportation fuels and systems, 2018-2021

Renewable transportation fuels and systems is a collaborative research program between the Swedish Energy Agency and f3 The Swedish Knowledge Centre for Renewable Transportation Fuels. The program runs for four years, from January 2018 to December 2021.

The climate issue, a general environment interest, and increasing oil prices have been drivers of a growing interest for renewable transportation fuels in Sweden and abroad during the last two decades. But there is a large number of renewable transportation fuels available for the transport sector, and each fuel can be produced in several ways. Possible combinations of feedstock, production route and technology bring on differences in energy efficiency, greenhouse gas emissions and cost performance for different transportation fuels. Policy development, the sustainability criteria discussion and environmental benefits, along with some alternatives being questioned, are causing insecurities and a high-risk level for public agencies, political authorities and industry.

Enhanced systems understanding based on science

The aim of the collaborative research program is analyses that contribute to the foundation of scientifically based decision support. It is also to enhance systems understanding among politicians, agencies, business and industry and other concerned stakeholders regarding how development and use of sustainable renewable transportation fuels can help Sweden reach the goal of a 70 percent reduction of CO2 emissions in the transportsector from the year 2010 to 2030, and, in the long run, a fossilfree transport sector.

Applications are assessed by the advisory board

Within the second phase of the collaborative research program, a number of calls for applications will be held. After a call for applications has closed, the submitted applications are prepared by the collaborative program office in order for the advisory board to assess them and leave a recommended decition (approval or rejection) in each specific case. Assessment criteria and terms for application, etc. are clarified and described in connection to each call for applications. Details can be found in the program description.
