    To improve air quality, Ghent’s inner city (the area within the ring road) is a low emission zone. Only vehicles that meet the entry requirements  are allowed into this zone.

How does the low emission zone work?

Registration obligation

Permitted vehicles with a foreign number plate must be registered. You can register your vehicle with the online tool. Always check your vehicle in advance to avoid a fine!

ATTENTION: Beware of certain commercial companies that offer you a service/sticker against payment. The City of Ghent is not in any way involved. 

Not automatically authorised? Then you can temporarily enter the LEZ 

  • Register your vehicle

    You can register certain vehicles for free. You can then enter all Flemish low-emission zones. Do this at the latest 1 day after you entered the LEZ.

  • Purchase a permit

    You can buy a permit for certain vehicles. This allows you to temporarily enter the Ghent LEZ. You must do this no later than 1 day after entering the LEZ.

  • Purchase a LEZ day pass

    A day pass gives you access to the Ghent LEZ for any type of vehicle, up to a maximum of 12 times a year. Purchase your day pass at the latest 1 day after you entered the LEZ.

View the Ghent low-emission zone on the map (coloured zone). Type your destination address in the search bar or select a car park and check whether it (or the road leading to it) is in the LEZ.

Grants and subsidies

  • Annul a number plate

    Are your getting rid of a polluting car and annulling its number plate? Receive up to €500 in subsidies to reimburse alternative transport such as bikes, public transport, car sharing, etc.

  • Scrapping grant

    Are you a Ghent resident with an increased allowance and a car that is not authorised in the low-emission zone (LEZ)? Then you can apply for 1 grant per family and per address to have 1 car scrapped.

  • Electric taxi

    If you purchase or lease an electric taxi and drive with a taxi licence for Ghent, you will receive a subsidy. You get a subsidy for up to 5 vehicles.
