Soya Bean Shipping A Master’s tool kit to reduce cargo claims

Mould spores that are naturally present on soya beans can grow during transit from South America to China and this can lead to self-heating, resulting in visible mould, caking in the stow and darkened beans - conditions which may lead the receiver to claim for cargo damage. Carriers have the responsibility to carefully care for cargo during transit. Carriers are not responsible for damage due to inherent conditions of the cargo. However, it is up to the carrier to prove that the damage was not due to failure to properly care for the cargo including appropriate ventilation.

This tool kit contains short videos to describe the process of microbiological instability in soya beans and best practices for ventilation that can be downloaded and shared as well as PDF versions of checklists and template ventilation logs. The aim is to assist those working with soya bean cargo to understand the root cause of self-heating, the best practices for ventilation and recommendations for the collection of evidence to defend claims when they arise.
