TOUSSAINT LOUVERTURE: The Story of the Only Successful Slave Revolt in History
Graphic Novel Launch with Nic Watts and Sakina Karimjee
Join us for a fascinating discussion with Nic Watts and Sakina Karimjee about their acclaimed graphic novel TOUSSAINT LOUVERTURE: The Story of the Only Successful Slave Revolt in History. The graphic novel adapts a play by Trinidadian revolutionary and intellectual C.L.R. James and retells the story of the Haitian and French Revolutions from the perspective of the black Haitian slave rebel army that forced France to grant their freedom. Challenging the idea that liberty and equality originated in Europe, the story overturns our most fundamental understandings of modernity and democracy, showing how the history of the colonies is the history of Europe as well.
The authors will present sections of their book and inspiration, in dialogue with prolific graphic novelist Mary Talbot, as well as Brian Baker and Shakthi Nataraj. The events are open to the public and there will be time for audience Q&A.
