Plans to house people seeking refugee protection in ‘off-shore’ detention centres and out-of-town institutions, like Napier ...

As you know, the tragic news last week that 27 men, women and children lost their lives unnecessarily in search of safety in the UK is a heart-breaking reminder of the need for urgent reform of the UK’s asylum system. But the Nationality and Borders Bill currently before Parliament will cause, in the words of the UN’s refugee agency, ‘significant suffering’ and ‘massive problems for individuals and…communities’.

I believe we need a more compassionate and effective approach including:

1. Opposing differentiated treatment: Clause 11 in the Bill will have grave consequences for people fleeing war and persecution, creating two classes of refugees based not on their need for protection, but on the journeys they had to make to get here. This will mean that people the UK currently recognised as refugees will be turned away in future. The Bill will: 
•	Separate families and lead to more dangerous journeys. 
•	Criminalise those helping people seeking asylum reach the UK - not just people smugglers, but refugees themselves or others providing help, such as by rescuing refugees at risk of drowning.

2: Committing to a global resettlement target: There is currently no way to apply for asylum in the UK without being physically present in the country. Resettlement is one of the few existing safe routes that refugees can access to come to the UK. While the government has promised the bill will provide new safe routes that can help address channel crossings, the Home Office has yet to publish any details on its plans.The government must commit to an ambitious, but deliverable, target of at least 10,000 global resettlement places a year including for Afghan refugees. This change doesn’t need legislation.

I am therefore asking you to consider several requests as my parliamentary representative.

•	Please support Amendment no. 8 which removes differentiated treatment at the bill’s report stage on 7th and 8th December 2021
•	Please speak up for the principle of global resettlement as a safe route the government should provide, during  the report stage of the bill
•	Please reflect my deep concerns about the Bill by speaking out locally, in Parliament, within your party and on social media
•	Please consider writing to the Home Secretary and/or Home Office ministers to convey concerns from a constituency perspective and to update me on any reply?
