Distinguishing the Difference between EAL and SEN

Outline

This face-to-face course will support delegates to ensure best practice for English as an Additional Language (EAL) pupils and their families in relation to SEN. We will cover how to distinguish between EAL and SEN difficulties and will explore a range of assessment materials.

Description

During this full-day course we will look at EAL pedagogy and consider how to distinguish between normal language learning progress and potential SEN. There will be an opportunity to examine a range of assessment materials that can be used to identify learning difficulties. Alongside this we will share good admission procedures, including communication with parents and the use of interpretation services.

Outcomes

  • An understanding of EAL pedagogy and the timescales involved in language development
  • An appreciation of the importance of good admissions procedures
  • An opportunity to explore the CAMYL assessment pack
