Stockport Answer Cancer Outreach

‘Stockport Answer Cancer Outreach’ is a project targeting men of African and Caribbean descent living in Stockport and parts of Manchester.  We want to raise awareness about prostate and bowel cancers. We know prostate cancer is common amongst black men so the emphasis will be on engaging young adults with the relevant information so they can share this new knowledge widely with the men in their family and community, specifically the target age group of 60 – 74 who may be reluctant to access the information publicly.

There will be monthly pop up / outreach community engagement workshops from February – May in community spaces such as barbershops, places of worship, takeaway shops, restaurants, car washes, car garages, and gyms.

Our volunteers/community champions will get a chance to learn more about prostate and bowel cancers, to look out for unusual signs and symptoms and know how to get tested so they can support others in their community. The workshops will be delivered virtually by professional health practitioners/specialists.

This is our first time working on a project like this, so we’re super excited about learning something new and sharing that information with the community. We’ll be going into spaces like barbershops, salons, churches, and mosques to test people’s knowledge on prostate and bowel cancers and signposting them to health professionals if needed.  Our community champions made up of young people will be filming and editing the content giving them a chance to work on a serious campaign” Solomon Onaolapo (Director).
