Research Interests

My research interests lie within the field of Clinical Microbiology and Healthcare Associate Infections. Specific aeas of interest include:

  • Clostridium difficile and Staphylococcal Infections
  • Biofilms; infections associated with indwelling intravascular devices and prosthetic joints
  • Skin Antisepsis and Antimicrobials/AMR
  • Propionibacterium acnes and its association with chronic back pain and Modic 1 changes

My teaching activity is broad and includes: young learners, undergraduate level and PhD. I also undertake many public engagement activities to share my interests and knowledge wthin Microbiology.

Formulation engineering stategies to enhance skin antisepsis and delivery of chlorhexidine

2008-2011 EPSRC CASE award (in collaboration with Insight Health Ltd): £100,000;
Germination formulatiion and the development of a smart polymer-based surface for elimination of C. difficile spores

2009 -2012 KTP award (Department of Health/Insight Health Ltd): £164,000;
Development of a germination solution for elimination of C. difficile spores

2010-2013 EPSRC CASE award (in collaboration with Insight Health Ltd): £100,000;
Development of a dual-action germinant-biocide for the elimination of C. diffficle
and microorganisms commonly associated with healthcare associated infections

2013-2016 ARCHA PhD Studentship (50% Industrial funding; Insight Health Ltd, UK): £75,000; Antimicrobial Bioglass

2014-2017: Full-industrially funded PhD (Insight Health Ltd): £60,000. Antimicrobial efficacy of octenidine.

2014: Students into Work Grant: The Society for Applied Microbiology, £2,500. This will support investigations into the association between Propionibacterium acnes and chronic lower back pain.
