Pankhurst in the Park 2018 Art salon @ Mothership NYC, 11th September, 7-30 pm to midnight, 252 Green St, Brooklyn, NY 11222, USA

2nd Tuesdays Mothership NYC are informal, salon-style gatherings for artist friends & colleagues and other arts appreciators. Doors open at 7:30 pm till late. We will be serving wine, but feel free to bring your beverage at choice and a pal or two. 

Through September, Norwegian artist Lotte Karlsen is Artist-in-Residence aboard @Mothership. For that month’s salon, Karlsen ‒ a UK-based artist, curator, and founder of Alexandra Arts‒ will bring the spirit of her most recent venture, the Pankhurst in the Park (PitP) festival 2014-18, from Manchester to New York with a “PitP-infused art salon”, hosted in and by Mothership NYC. 

The event will feature a musical performance of EP VITAMIX by art collective Ultracultural Others/ /UNDAKOV & Or Nah, releasing this fall. View suffragette inspired sculptural artwork by artist Anna FC Smith and a white wall social justice colour explosion by Bibi Flores. Experience an installation and a therapeutic performance by space babe Kelly Shaw Willman and projections on the outdoor brick wall by moving image wizard Pablo Bueno Melchor. A creative flow travelling from the EMINENT DOMAIN flash exhibition staged at the former blue-chip Robert Miller gallery space in West Chelsea in July, the project originally started with Alexandra Arts recent collaboration with NYC’s online-based ART 511 Magazine. This spring, they teamed up to produce a limited-edition print commission: a publication marking International Women’s Day and the centenary of women over thirty earning the right to vote in England. This year’s will be the final Pankhurst in the Park Festival. There will be a NYC closing ceremony at Last Frontier NYC in Greenpoint, on 21st of September, 2018. 7.30 – midnight. 

Everyone is invited to join us in celebrating four years in which the Pankhurst in the Park project has spearheaded an initiative committed to providing a platform for women in the arts by commissioning a stunningly broad array of artists, performers, makers, and critics and reaching out to all members of the community regardless of gender, class, or cultural background through workshops, open exhibitions, performances, and other events. Plus, this is the last chance to catch UK-based Anna FC Smith’s work now touring NYC!

ART511MAG in partnership with Alexandra Arts PRESENTS: EMINENT DOMAIN - A DYNAMIC, INTERSECTIONAL FEMINIST ART EXHIBITION IN THE HEART OF THE CHELSEA GALLERY DISTRICT. This 3-day flash feminist art exhibit features over 90 artists from around the world. 

The exhibition concludes Saturday, July 14 with a moderated panel discussion titled: Women in the Arts - Sisterhood & Sustainability

Our concluding panel comprises of a diverse cross-section of thought leaders in the International Art World playing the fluid roles of curator, organizer/activist, gallerist, artist and arts administrator.

On June ninth, 2018, to celebrate the close of Ekua Bayunu’s 8-week AIR project, “Women Hold up Half the Sky”, you are invited to participate in a day of events presenting and reflecting on the work.

The events for the day are as follows:

·         An exhibition, including films of the project’s development, at Chorlton Lodge: 11-3pm

·         An outdoor sculpture trail, which will take place across the park: 1-6pm

·         Art Workshop in the community room at the Depot: 12-2pm

·         Exhibition and Closing Party at the Pavilion: 2-6pm

The project draws from a central theme of the Pankhurst in the Park project, the legacy of the suffrage movement and the special significance of Alexandra Park in this history. Emmeline Pankhurst lived just on the borders of the park and 2018 marks not only the centenary of the right of women (over 30) to vote. It will also be a hundred and ten years since hundreds of suffragettes marched in Alexandra Park. 

Bayunu’s work will expand beyond local concerns to build on the themes of global women’s leadership and consider culture, the arts and creativity as tools for active citizenship of central significance.

Already with significant experience as an artist, Bayunu moved to Manchester in 1993 and has since then produced several high-profile works around the city (“Sensory Garden” in Hulme Park, “Anansi Mosaics” at Royce Primary School), worked in outreach support at Manchester’s Contact Theatre between 2001 and 2006, worked from her studio at Artwork Atelier in Salford, and organised exhibitions celebrating Black History Month in collaboration with Global Arts Manchester in 2017. Ekua started 2018 with her solo exhibition titled “Re:Birth” at Manchester’s Chuck Gallery. She has lived and worked as an artist and tutor with a keen sense of community participation for several decades.

The last edition of three, Pankhurst in the Park’s (PitP) has returned in 2018; to celebrate the centenary for women winning the right to vote (over 30).

Alexandra Arts and artist Anna FC Smith invite you to mark the historic achievements of the Suffrage Movement on this significant anniversary by reflecting on the methods of protest used by these activists. Join us in Manley Park on May 7th, at Whalley Range’s very own Celebrate Festival, between noon and 4pm. We will be located in the ‘age-friendly’ marquee. Here, Anna will be running a workshop centring around eggs, protest, carnival, and the Women’s Suffrage Movement. (Please note that the eggs are hollow and will be filled with organic Diwali style coloured powder.)

The significance of eggs is grounded in the Women’s Suffrage Movement. Smith draws from an often-overlooked method of protest by these groups – the pelting of eggs and flour on public officials and buildings. Egg throwing, Smith argues, has long been a form of carnivalesque transgression. As well as a symbol of sabotage and mayhem, eggs also evoke fertility, new life, the domestic and the everyday.

In July, a new body of work drawing from these themes and the contributions of participants will be presented at EMINENT DOMAIN: A Flash Art Exhibition in West Chelsea, New York's premier art district.

As part of the Wonder Woman* festival 2015, we are pleased to announce that on Thursday 26th March 2015 Alexandra Arts will be ‘taking over’ Thursday Lates at Manchester Art Gallery to present Pankhurst in the Gallery, a free event for all ages and genders.

Our Holy Creatrixxx infused Pankhurst in the Gallery will celebrate the life and work of Emmeline Pankhurst. Inspired by Manchester Art Gallery’s fashion collections, the event will explore the Suffrage movement in terms of activism, image and empowerment.

People will be invited to dress up – take inspiration from the Suffragette colours of green, purple and white or even the gallery’s collections. Or simply rock up as you are and join in at the adornment making station.

The evening includes a showcase and sale of artworks from this year's Pankhurst in the Park's International Artist in Residency Go! Push Pops and their final performance Holy Creatrixxx. We have limited edition screen prints of Katarzyna Jablonska's portrait of Emmeline Pankhurst, and signed photo books by Pablo Melchor and Zuza Grubecka. This will be topped off with a performance by Naomi Kashiwagi and a screening of our video artist portrait of Go! Push Pops. Expect funky tunes and slashes of neon!

Pankhurst in the Gallery will take place from 5.00pm – 8.00pm, Manchester Art Gallery.
