Degree Holder Entry Programme – Accelerated Detective Pathway

 

We are excited to announce that North Yorkshire Police have today launched a new recruitment campaign that allows applicants to join a structured two-year programme to become a Detective through the Degree Holder Entry Programme (DHEP).

What is a Detective?

 

As a Detective, you will hold one of the most vital roles in policing, ensuring that the most vulnerable members of the community are kept safe and the most dangerous are prevented from causing harm. You will find yourself investigating criminal offences such as robbery, burglary, rape and serious assault. 

 

Once you are a qualified as a Detective you will be able to apply for more specialist roles investigating murder, organised crime and fraud. At the end of the two you programme you will be eligible to apply for specialist portfolios such as family liaison and advanced interviewing, you will also be able to apply for promotion through the National Police Promotion Framework (NPPF).

 

The Programme

 

The Accelerated Detective Pathway is a fast-track process for those with transferable skills, knowledge and experience to become a detective. You’ll be supported all the way through the Degree Holder Entry Programme by our Professional Development Unit and Training departments to achieve your goal of becoming a Detective Constable at North Yorkshire Police.

 

As a trainee Detective Constable, you will start a two-year probationary period. Initially being equipped with the knowledge and skills required of all police officers – like officer safety training, understanding key powers and making arrests.

 

This period will include being tutored and going out on patrol with a tutor constable, before eventually going out on independent patrol. You will then move to an investigation unit where you will work towards a Graduate Diploma in Professional Policing Practice.

 

After your second year you will be required to complete and pass the National Investigators Exam and Detective Training Course after which you will achieve accredited detective status.

Detective Superintendent Fran Naughton, Head of Crime, said

 

“We’re looking for the curious and tenacious who will leave no stone unturned. We need the sort of person who can build professional relationships with victims, witnesses and partners. You will have to be emotionally resilient when faced with the aftermath of traumatic incidents and possess the compassion to provide an outstanding service to victims. Could you stay calm in the face of adversity? Could you critically analyse material to decide whether it can be used as evidence?

 

“Being a Detective is not always like you see on TV, but you will get to deal with interesting and challenging situations where no two days are the same. Some of us have a desire to discover the truth and willing to go the extra mile. If this feels familiar and you have achieved a 2:2 degree or higher then we want to hear from you.”

 

The Application Process

 

The applicant must hold a Level 6 Qualifications at a grade of 2:2 or above - Proof of qualification is required.  An image of all relevant qualifications must be uploaded at the time of application.

 

You should hold a full, valid manual EU/UK driving licence. If you do not currently hold a full manual UK/EU driving licence, you must be hold one by the end of year 1 from the date of your appointment. 

 

Those joining this rigorous programme will initially go through a written application and assessment centre. Applicants successful at final interview will undergo a medical assessment, fitness test and security check before a final job offer will be made. North Yorkshire Police are recruiting for positions across the county.

 

It is our aim to keep you updated throughout each stage of the recruitment process via the online application centre, so please ensure you keep checking this on a regular basis.

 

All successful candidates would be working towards a start date of end of February 2023.

 

N.B: You must be 17 or above to apply to become a police officer and, if successful, may take up appointment once you reach the age of 18.

  • Salary - starting on £26,682, rising to £28,932 after completing your first year. 
  • Shift pattern- As a detective you will work four 12 hour shifts with four shifts off, providing you with a good work/life balance.
  • Unsociable hours- you will be paid an additional 10% per hourly rate for every hour you work between 8pm and 6am
  • Pension scheme- we offer a contributory pension scheme which is based on a percentage of your pensionable pay.  (12.44 % at appointment)
  • Annual leave allowance- 22 days annual leave, increasing to 25 after 2 years at Detective Constable rank
