‘The Lost Voices’ releases its final report and resources for early career researchers
'The Lost Voices' is a national campaign aiming to highlight and tackle inequalities faced by the early-career researcher (ECR) community, led by NIHR ARC North Thames researcher Dr Sarah Jasim. The final report from the campaign is now out - summarising the stories and concerns shared, presenting discussion and proposed solutions, and suggesting future directions that will ultimately benefit researchers, research, institutions and communities. The work has also generated an early career researcher toolkit.

New clinical trial aims to improve diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of long COVID
A major new consortium led by University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and UCL, and supported by NIHR ARCs East Midlands, North Thames, North West Coast, South West Peninsula and Yorkshire & Humber has recently been awarded £6.8 million by the NIHR to conduct the largest clinical study of long COVID over the next two years. The STIMULATE-ICP consortium is made up of more than 30 researchers, health professionals, patients and industry partners from over 30 organisations.

NIHR ARC National Priority for adult social care and social work publishes report on involving people with lived experience
In the same week that the NIHR published its long-awaited report on Public Involvement in Social Care Research, NIHR ARC West Midlands published the report, ‘Equal Access to the Knowledge Table’, which shares findings from a scoping exercise to understand more about how service users, carers and public contributors shape social care research across the NIHR ARC network. Recommendations from the report will be used to inform approaches to involvement in the National Priority for Adult Social Care and Social Work, which is led by NIHR ARC Kent, Surrey & Sussex.

New resource developed for tackling health inequalities
A team at Lancaster University linked to the NIHR ARC North-West Coast has created an online resource for public sector professionals and community activists working locally to reduce health inequalities. The resource neighbourhoodresilience.uk translates lessons from the Neighbourhood Resilience Programme. Case studies of nine neighbourhoods offer insight into the opportunities and challenges encountered and the impacts that can be achieved.

NIHR ARC OxTV supported PRINCIPLE trial 'highly commended' for innovative use of health data
The PRINCIPLE trial, which the NIHR ARC Oxford and Thames Valley was a fundamental part of setting up in the early days of the pandemic, has been highly commended at the Health Data Research UK Awards for the way in which patient data is utilised so participants are contacted about the trial soon after receiving a positive test result.

Kailo project to improve adolescent mental health receives £5.3 million funding
A project led by NIHR ARC North Thames, NIHR ARC South West Peninsula, University College London, Exeter University and Dartington Service Design Lab and Shift, has been awarded a UK Prevention Research Partnership Consortium award of £5.3 million to improve adolescent mental health in disadvantaged communities. The Kailo project brings together a multidisciplinary team of leading researchers and practitioners to work alongside communities to develop locally tailored strategies to combat the underlying causes of adolescent mental ill health.

Researcher's Week 2021
This summer, the NIHR ARC Kent, Surrey and Sussex Academy hosted a week of free, online events to support the learning and development needs of applied health and social care researchers across Kent, Surrey and Sussex. The week, which included a range of workshops and presentations attracted more than 800 registrations. NIHR ARC KSS colleagues and external speakers focussed on capacity building, co-production, public & community involvement and implementation.

Could balance training help to reduce falls in people with COPD?
New research led by Dr Samantha Harrison from Teesside University, linked to NIHR ARC North East and North Cumbria, will explore the relationship between Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and an increased risk of falling. Dr Harrison has secured an NIHR Advanced Fellowship for her work, and £1.1 million in funding.

Help to co-design exercise programme for Parkinson's
NIHR ARC East of England researcher and PhD student at the University of Cambridge Ledia Alushi is investigating what information people with Parkinson's receive about exercise and physical activity, when they are newly diagnosed and as the condition progresses. Health care professionals and people with Parkinson's are invited to take part in surveys to understand exercise needs and preferences, resources currently available, and co-design a programme to support exercise and physical activity.

Heart failure and hospital readmissions
Research by authors from NIHR ARC East Midlands and NIHR ARC West Midlands recently won the Nurse Investigator Award at the ‘Heart Failure 2021’ congress, hosted by the Heart Failure Association of the European Society of Cardiology. The paper by Dr Claire Lawson and colleagues looked at trends in 30-day hospital readmissions following initial hospitalisation for heart failure and found an increase in readmission rates over the last 16 years, with a greater impact on those who are less affluent and those who belong to an ethnic minority group.

This PhD studentship will apply the positive deviance approach, which is a bottom up approach to quality improvement, to identify recommendations for how better to support people with severe mental illness to reduce or stop smoking. The PhD will also compare these recommendations with those developed using a more traditional 'top down' approach of an evidence review. As such the PhD will compare a bottom up with a top down approach to developing improvement recommendations.
