SSCR Associate Director awarded British Society of Gerontology Outstanding Achievement Award
Congratulations to Associate Director Professor Jill Manthorpe who has received a British Society of Gerontology (BSG) Outstanding Achievement Award. She was one of five individuals awarded BSG’s highest honour this year.

The award is made annually to individuals who have made a significant and lasting contribution to gerontological understanding of ageing, or to improving the lives of older people, in academic thinking, policy, practice or education.

The School is delighted Jill’s work and intellectual leadership for adult social care has been recognised with this award.
Findings

Volunteers in social care 

Research by the University of Bristol sets out the difficulties associated with recruiting and training volunteers to work in social care services for older people. The findings were published this week in the Voluntary Sector Review.

Self-neglect among older people

A report by King’s College London sets out findings from an literature review on adult social care responses to self-neglect among older people.

Loneliness and sight loss

Research by the University of York examining the experience of loneliness amongst residents with sight loss has been published in the Journal of Ageing Studies.

Forced marriage and learning disabilities

Research by the University of Nottingham explored the perspectives of South Asian carers on the risk of forced marriage among people with learning disabilities.

This poem, produced in 2020, is about the experiences and hopes of older people who self-fund their social care.

NIHR Focus on Public Involvement

People who use services, carers and professionals are engaged in a wide range of NIHR SSCR activities and research studies. The NIHR has recently highlighted public involvement in social care.

Blog: Public involvement and social care research

This NIHR blog emphasises the need for researchers, research commissioners and managers to play a part in improving public involvement in social care research. 

Involvement in care research

A report commissioned by the NIHR from the Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) on user, carer and public involvement in social care research was published recently. SSCR has reflected on the report’s recommendations.

NIHR survey 

The NIHR is carrying out a Public Involvement Feedback Survey about people’s experiences of public involvement across NIHR outside of being a participant in a research study/trial. The survey closes on 22 August.

ARC West Midlands report

The NIHR Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) West Midlands is leading public involvement in the ARC National Priority on Social Care and Social Work. They carried out a scoping exercise to inform future ways of working.

The NIHR Academy is looking for expressions of interest to become a member of their Selection Committee. Participation from those involved in social care is encouraged.

IMPACT Centre Survey

SSCR is pleased to be engaging with IMProving Adult Care Together (IMPACT), a new £15 million UK centre for implementing evidence in adult social care. The Centre would like to hear from anyone involved with or connected to adult social care as they develop and test ideas.
