Major new funding opportunity for local government based public health research collaborations
The NIHR has launched an exciting new initiative to fund public health research collaborations based in local authorities.

The new funding has been assigned for five new Health Determinant Research Collaborations (HDRC), which will focus on how to address the wider determinants of population health and health inequalities, explicitly addressing the needs of local disadvantaged groups.

Starting this month, the NIHR Academy is offering a programme of online workshops and webinars to support colleagues in enhancing their leadership and management skills.

There are sessions relevant to early or mid-career researchers, and workshops aimed at senior research leaders.

Invention for Innovation: an introduction to the NIHR i4i funding programme and our i4i seminar series  
 
The Research Design Service is holding a series of events focusing on funding from the Invention for Innovation (i4i) Programme:
  1. The 22 September 2021, 13:00-14:30 session is an overview of what translational research entails, and what i4i committees are looking for in applications.
  2. A three-part series (6, 13 and 20 October 2021, 13:00-14:30) providing deeper insights into aspects of i4i project development, and highlighting which organisations you'll need to consult during the research design process.

The Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy is conducting an independent review of research bureaucracy. They are seeking views on ways to substantially reduce research bureaucracy, primarily for the benefit of individuals and teams conducting research.

Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) reduces need for invasive ventilation in hospitalised COVID-19 patients
The NIHR-supported RECOVERY-RS trial has demonstrated that treating hospitalised COVID-19 patients who have acute respiratory failure with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), reduces the need for invasive mechanical ventilation.

Dr Hasnain Dalal and Prof Rod Taylor describe how they’ve used several consecutive funding awards from the NIHR to develop, test and implement a new home-based approach to rehabilitation that is now improving lives for people with heart failure.
Lung drug trial offers new hope for heart failure patients    

An early phase trial, funded by the NIHR, brings new hope for patients with a common form of heart failure. Dr Chris Miller’s study, published in Nature Medicine, showed that a drug used to treat lung fibrosis could offer a viable treatment for heart failure with preserved ejection fraction.    
HRA/MHRA Combined Review update: new application service     

The NIHR Clinical Research Network is now offering earlier support, using the Non-commercial Portfolio Application service within our Central Portfolio Management System. Investigators applying for ethical and regulatory approval for Clinical Trials of Investigational Medicinal Products through the HRA/MHRA’s combined review service can apply now.
