So far we've successfully completed improvements to both footpaths over the bridge, however since starting work we've unfortunately discovered the concrete bridge slabs are unsuitable for re-use as planned, and will need to be replaced.
We’ve been carrying out the improvements under a mix of full closures, and temporary traffic lights.

We’re replacing and improving the safety barriers in the verges of the A21 between Morleys Roundabout and Kipping’s Cross.

The work is currently scheduled to finish on the morning of Saturday 21 December and while we always aim to work to the programme, unforeseen circumstances or adverse weather conditions may mean changes.
We’ll keep this page and our social media channels up to date with any changes, and will make every effort to ensure the impact on the local community and travelling public is kept to a minimum. Please accept our apologies in advance for any inconvenience this may cause. The first few months of traffic management are listed below.

We’re upgrading the traffic lights and pedestrian crossing controls at Star Lane and Netherne Drive on the A23 Brighton Road in Hooley.
These lights are approaching the end of their serviceable life and the changes we’re making will make sure that journeys remain safe and reliable.
We’ll be working at both junctions simultaneously during the week between 8pm and 5:30am to reduce the overall duration of our scheme. We’ll also use this opportunity to refresh the road markings in areas at the same time.
Our work is currently on schedule to be completed by March 2024.
- What’s going to happen?
We’ll need to install traffic cones and temporary multi-way traffic lights at both junctions each night to provide safe working space for our teams and protect road users and pedestrians.
The traffic cones will be removed each morning to restore both junctions to their full capacity during busier daytime use, however, the temporary traffic lights and pedestrian crossing controls will need to remain in operation 24 hours a day.
These lights will be adjusted to replicate the usual daytime traffic light patterns to ensure the impact on journey times is minimised.

Coastbound diversion route: A clearly signed diversion route will be in place taking traffic along the A249, M2, A2, A20
As part of our work to maintain the M20, we’ve been repairing and replacing the safety barriers between junctions 9 and 13.
Once this work is complete, we’ll start repairing the barriers between junctions 7 and 8.
Where possible, we’re using overnight lane closures to minimise disruption, however there will be some full closures while we’re working on slip roads.
As we need to remove the old barriers to complete our work, you may notice some temporary barriers on the hard shoulder during the day. These are to keep everyone on the motorway safe and will not impact on drivers using the main carriageway.

We’re carrying out essential carriageway repairs to the M25 clockwise slip road between the A21 and M26 at junction 5 (Sevenoaks) and need to close the road over a weekend.
We need enough time to allow each new later to set as well as break out the existing road surface to expose the concrete bridge deck and install a new waterproofing to further protect the structure.
Closure information
WEEKEND CLOSURE CANCELLED
We had planned to close the M25 clockwise on the weekend of Saturday 18 to Monday 20 November, but we've had to postpone this work.
We'll update this page with the new closure dates as soon as possible.
Drivers travelling clockwise from Dartford will not be able to continue along the M25 into Kent and Surrey. Please note this closure won’t affect journeys between the M26 and M25, anti-clockwise traffic on the M25, or anyone travelling on the A21.
Diversion information
A clearly signed diversion will be in place via the two right-hand side lanes to continue along the A21 southbound, turning around at Morley’s Roundabout to join the A21 northbound and return to M25 junction 5.
We recently switched off some sections of life-expired street lighting around the M25 network as part of our work towards achieving National Highways’ net zero targets.
This includes some sections of street lighting in the following areas:
- 4 miles between junctions 6 and 9
- 2 miles between junction 21a to 23
- 4 miles between junction 29 to 30
Switching off these lights is estimated to save around 676,800 kgCO2e; the equivalent of taking over 400 cars off the road a year or the energy use of 85.3 homes over one year. Some areas, such as around junctions and slip roads, will remain lit and continue to be maintained. This will allow motorists to adjust between the different lighting levels on the M25 main carriageway and local road networks.
We carried out a thorough safety review prior to switching off the lighting in these sections. The lighting columns will remain in place for up to two years while we undertake further post switch-off safety reviews and signs are currently in place to indicate to motorists where sections of lighting have been switched off.
Our evidence on the M25 network suggests that turning off lighting reduces incidents. This not only supports the government's Net Zero strategy, but also benefits the environment, helping wildlife and reducing light pollution.
You can find more information about our net zero highways plan on our dedicated webpage.

You can find more details about the maintenance schemes taking place on the M4 below:
We’re carrying out repairs to the reinforced concrete bridge piers which support the elevated section of the M4 as it crosses above the A4 Great West Road in West London.
The elevated section of the M4 forms part of one of the main strategic routes through West London and adjoins key roads such as the A4 Great West Road; helping to connect people, communities, and businesses. Like any major structure, it requires regular maintenance to keep it in a safe and serviceable condition.
Latest update: 4 March 2024
We’ve now completed the repairs to several piers between Ealing Road and Clayponds Avenue. New reinforcing steel has been fitted to the piers and new concrete has been applied to keep them safe for future years.
The scaffolding access and protective barriers have now been removed, enabling us to reopen lane 3 of the A4 through this section, which had been closed for safety.
Future planned works
Work to improve the condition of several piers at the eastern end of the M4 elevated section, near junction 1 and the Chiswick Roundabout, is expected to take place later in the year. Please check back for updates.
We’re carrying out essential repairs to Welford viaduct, which takes the M4 over Rood Hill and the River Lambourn near Easton to maintain the structures safety for years to come.
We're doing extensive concrete repairs, re-waterproofing, resurfacing, and replacing the bridge joint on both carriageways.
Temporary traffic lights have been installed underneath the viaduct on Rood Hill. We’ll also need to close Rood Hill overnight at some point to install scaffolding. Closure dates will be displayed on local signs and on this webpage in advance.
We’re currently on track to complete this work in July 2024 and always aim to work to programme, but please note that these works are subject to change due to unforeseen circumstances such as unsuitable weather.
Upcoming closure information
• There's a 3-way temporary traffic light underneath the viaduct on Rood Hill, which needs to remain in place for the duration of our work.
• From Tuesday 16 January until April 2024, there'll be a 24/7 contraflow arrangement in place with the westbound carriageway closed between junction 13 and 14. Traffic will run on two lanes in each direction on the eastbound carriageway, with a 40mph speed limit in place. Access for the emergency services will be retained on the westbound carriageway.
***Amended closure dates***
There's a further change to when the viaduct will be closed. There will now only be two further closures - one on Tuesday 9 April which will be a westbound closure and another on Wednesday 10 April which will be eastbound.
Diversion information
• When Rood Hill is closed, drivers will be diverted via A338, B4000 through Wickham and High Street.
• When the motorway is closed, a fully signed diversion will be in place in both directions via A34, A4 Bath Road and A338.
Our programme will continue into next year with further closures in 2024. Please continue to check back here for updates.
The M4 eastbound will be closed 9pm to 6am weeknights only within junction 13 Junction with an up and over diversion to carryout bridge joint replacement works and resurfacing. The road will be open as usual over weekends.
