Abujhmarh

Abujhmarh has a tribal population of about 34,000 inhabiting some 233 far-flung villages over a sprawling area of 4,000 sq. km. It is described as a "tangled knot of hills" having an inaccessible terrain that remains absolutely cut off from the rest of the civilized world for about 6 months a year even to this day. Abujhmarh region is about 95 km long from North to South and about 55 km. broad from East to West. A large part of this area is rugged and dissected by numerous streams.

The word "Abujhmarh" is the combination of two words, one Hindi 'Abujh' meaning 'unknown' and the other Gondi word 'Marh' that means - 'highland'. True to its name it still continues to be more or less an unknown and non-surveyed area.

The habitants of this areas are called Abujhmaria. Meta Koitar or the "Hill Marias" or the Abujhmarias (as they are popularly known now) are a primitive tribe of their origin with almost no history at all.  Hill marias being in a place of extreme geographical isolation for long, are having very poor and primitive economy. Slash-and-burn cultivation practiced on the steep hill slopes or terraces are their only means of economical earning. They are to toil hard to have morsel of food. Literacy is very low, almost nil.

He who sees Shiva in the poor, in the weak, and in the diseased, really worships Shiva; and if he sees Shiva only in the image, his worship is but preliminary.    - Swami Vivekananda
