Heartstopper actor Kit Connor has responded to fans who’ve come out to their families with the help of his poignant scenes in the Netflix series.

The new show follows Charlie Spring (Joe Locke), an openly gay teenage student who has a crush on his friend, Nick Nelson (Kit Connor).

The two young LGBTQ+ schoolboys fall in love, with the series navigating coming to terms with their sexuality, their high school bullies and finding each other.

Kit joined his co-star Joe on the This Morning sofa to chat about the incredible reception the teen LGBTQ+ love story has received since its release last Friday.

The most poignant moment in Heartstopper is when Nick comes out as bisexual in the final episode to his mum, played by Olivia Colman, who is full of pride for her son, and reaches out to his hand to tell him she loves him.

Phillip Schofield noted: ‘[That scene] been used by some fans to help them come out to their parents hasn’t it?’

Kit told Holly Willoughby and Phil: ‘There was a beautiful tweet that came out, from a fan, who used the show to come out.

‘It was basically talking about after showing quite an important scene in the show, at the end of the show with my character, they essentially used that to come out to their parents.’

He went on to add: ‘To me, that’s the most gratifying moment in my career, ever. For an 18-year-old to be able to have that effect on anyone’s life is unbelievable.’

The fan in question quickly reacted after having his Twitter thread spoken about on national TV, joyfully sharing: ‘Move over Olivia Colman and Taron Egerton because my tweet is the most gratifying moment of Kit Connor’s career.’

Meanwhile, his co-star Joe shared his wild experience of getting the part, having not done any professional acting in the past.

‘I’d not done any professional acting before. They did an open casting call and I think around 10,000 people auditioned and you didn’t need an agent, you just sent in a self-tape and then I got a recall.

I thought, even if I don’t get it, that’s quite cool – and then I got another recall! I thought, “Oh, what if this actually happens? Then I ended up getting the part and it was just, all my dreams came true.’

But Joe was on his own when he received the news due to having to isolate, adding: I’m from the Isle of Man and it was during Covid last year, I had to fly to London for an audition and fly home and isolate on my own for two weeks.

‘I was on my own and my agent phoned me and said you got the job, it was just me in my house with the dog – I screamed very loudly!’

Heartstopper can be streamed in full on Netflix now and This Morning airs weekdays from 10am on ITV.
