A service of thanksgiving to remember the life of Prince Philip will be held at Westminster Abbey next year.

The Queen’s late husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, died on April 9 this year aged 99.

Buckingham Palace said the service will take place in Spring 2022 and that further details will be revealed in due course.

It is understood the guestlist is still being finalised.

It is thought it will consist of family, friends, dignitaries and representatives of the charities and organisations which Philip was associated with.

Prince Philip died peacefully at Windsor Castle in April, two months before he was due to turn 100.

Only 30 guests were allowed to attend the duke’s funeral service at St George’s chapel due to coronavirus restrictions at the time.

The Queen sat alone – socially distanced from her family – as she mourned her husband of nearly 74 years.

The then Princess Elizabeth married Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten on November 20 1947 at Westminster Abbey.

The couple’s relationship lasted the longest of any British sovereign and Philip was at the Queen’s side throughout the decades, supporting her in her role as head of state.

Following his death, the Queen said she and her family were in a ‘period of great sadness’, but that she was comforted by the tributes paid to him.

‘We have been deeply touched, and continue to be reminded that Philip had such an extraordinary impact on countless people throughout his life,’ she said.

This year will be the first Christmas the 95-year-old monarch will spend without her late husband.

The Queen is expected to be joined at Windsor Castle on Christmas Day by her son Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, having shelved her customary trip to Sandringham as a ‘precautionary’ measure due to rising Covid cases.
