Michael Englesbe, MD, FACS is the Cyrenus G. Darling Sr., MD and Cyrenus G. Darling Jr., MD Professor of Surgery at the University of Michigan in the Section of Transplantation Surgery. He practices liver and kidney transplantation in children and adults. He is the portfolio director of the BCBSM supported Quality Collaboratives in Michigan. He is the director of the Michigan Surgical Quality Collaborative (MSQC) and the co-director of the Opioid Prescribing and Engagement Network (OPEN). His primary research interest is in surgery and population health. He has funding for his work from the National Institute of Health, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Michigan, and Michigan – Health and Human Services. He serves as a vice chair of the Department of Surgery – leading the surgical resident academic development time. He lives in Ann Arbor with his wife and 3 children.
Education Focus
Dr. Englesbe is very involved in undergraduate, medical student, and surgeon education. He directs the medical school 3rd and 4th year curriculum. He leads the academic surgeon development program for the Department of Surgery. His greatest passion is facilitating an impact focused career trajectory for students and trainees.
Research Focus
Dr. Englesbe has an active research group. The focus is improving the quality and efficiency of surgical care through practice change. His current work uses analytic morphomic techniques to assess patient risk, and then investigate ways to mitigate these risks through physical activity. He is also working to understand and combat the opioid crisis in Michigan. He is the Associate Director of the Michigan Surgical Quality Collaborative. He directs the Michigan Surgical Home and Optimization Program. He co-directs the Michigan Opioid Prescribing and Engagement Network. He has funding for his work from the National Institute of Health, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Michigan, and Michigan – Health and Human Services.
