On 18 December 2023, armed clashes continued between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Medani Al Kubra and Sharg Aj Jazirah localities, in Aj Jazirah. Clashes were reported in Wad Medani Town and Hantub village of Medani Al Kubra locality and in Rufa’ah Town and Junayd village of Sharg Aj Jazirah locality. The field team reported that the conflict has expanded to western neighbourhoods in Wad Madni Town.
Field teams indicated that the clashes continue to cause widespread displacement across Wad Madni Town. Preliminary information from the field teams in Aj Jazirah indicate that at least 250,000 – 300,000 IDPs have fled Aj Jazirah state since the eruption of the clashes on 15 December 2023. Given the scarcity of available transport options, many people have reportedly fled by foot.
Affected residents have reportedly sought refuge in Sennar state and have transited through Sennar state to reach Gedaref, Kassala, and Blue Nile states. Additionally, field teams in White Nile observed IDPs arriving, with some transiting across the border to South Sudan though the Renk border crossing point. According to updates from field teams, displaced households are currently sheltering in open areas, improvised shelters, schools, and within the host community.
The situation remains tense and unpredictable. Clashes remain ongoing as of 18 December 2023. DTM is monitoring the situation closely and will provide further information on displacement and population mobility linked to the latest clashes when available.
