Northern College retains independence and launches new course programme

The future is bright at Northern College. We are here to stay as an independent charity with secured funding to roll out an exciting new course programme to support adults to re-enter education and transform their lives.

During this period of growth, we have also modernised our brand, are getting ready to launch a new website, and are recruiting for new staff to a range of exciting new roles.

Why study at Northern College? Our students tell us why and share our outstanding student achievement rates (2018-19).

Virtual events and on-campus tours

We are running on-campus events and tours where you can visit the college, see the facilities yourself and speak with our experts who will be able to provide advice and guidance. We are also running virtual events where you can meet us remotely. The choice is yours.

Come learn about our new exciting course programme for 2021-22 and studying with us. Our staff will be on hand to answer any questions and make you feel welcome.

Still time to apply for our Access to Higher Education programme

We have a few remaining residential and non-residential places on our level 3 Access to Higher Education courses starting from September 2021, to fast-track you to university: Book early to avoid disappointment. Our Access to Higher Education programme had a 100 per cent pass rate (2018-19) and we receive excellent feedback from our students: "Great tutors and I loved being in such picturesque surroundings, what a beautiful place to learn." (Access to Higher Education student, 2019-20)

Worried about paying for your course? Most students aged 19 to 23 do not need to pay for our access courses, if they do not have a full level 3 qualification already. Eligible students aged 24 and over can take out an Advanced Learner Loan and don’t need to repay if they complete their degree afterwards, or until they earn a certain amount - essentially studying for free.

Not quite ready to study at level 3? We also support many students to gain the study skills they need at level 2. This includes our Level 2 Pre-Access Diploma (Health Professions, Level 2 Pre-Access Diploma (Social Studies), and various English, maths and digital qualifications you need to achieve your goals. We can provide you with guidance on most appropriate course level when you apply, or contact us to learn more.

Launch of new fast-track level 3 Business and Enterprise courses

Interested in working in business, or becoming a budding entrepreneur?

Alongside a new programme of business and enterprise short courses, we have launched two exciting new fast-track level 3 qualifications (equivalent to an A-level) starting this year to help you progress to university or a higher-level role in the workplace.

Level 3 Diploma in Management Skills and Knowledge (25 September 2021 to 15 January 2022, delivered residentially over nine weekends on a residential basis). This is free to all adults aged 19 and over who don’t already have a level 3 qualification, or you can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan you don’t pay back until earning over a certain amount.

Level 3 Applied General Certificate in Business and Enterprise (13 October 2021 to 12 May 2022, non-residential and taking place very Wednesday and Thursday on campus during the day).  This is free to all adults aged 19-23 who don't already have a level 3 qualification, or you can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan.

Our new short course programme in business and enterprise covers a range of important subjects, including marketing, social media marketing and management techniques. We also offer a new career transition day for working in a business environment.

New GCSE Language Lift qualification

Would you like to achieve your GCSE English or Maths? GCSE English and Maths qualifications are essential for many adults to gain access to further or higher education, and a requirement of many employers.

In light of this, we are now offering the new GCSE English Language Lift (9-1) qualification which has been designed to engage and motivate adults through a choice of contemporary texts, relatable modern themes, and skills-based writing tasks. This qualification is an alternative to the current GCSE English Language qualification as opposed to a replacement, and holds the same value. We have evening and daytime study options available for you, so you can choose the best option for your needs. This is alongside our GCSE Maths option.
