Welcome to our December Primary Bulletin!
In this edition we are excited to share with you the details of our brilliant Specialist Knowledge for Teaching Mathematics Programmes and Years 5-8 Continuity Work Group starting in January.
Find out why you should make space for Spatial Reasoning in your curriculum by attending our free online taster session on the 12th December at 3.45pm.
We have also included the latest news from the NCETM with their November Primary Round-up and new web page explaining how trusts can work with their local Maths Hub
It is worth remembering that all our Work Groups, Programmes and Communities are fully funded by the Maths Hubs Programme, so participation is free for all state funded schools.

Free Online Taster Session

“The relation between spatial ability and mathematics is so well established that it no longer makes sense to ask whether they are related.”
(Mix & Cheng, 2012)

Come and join us for this short 'taster' session on Tuesday 12th December 3.45 - 4.45pm to discover more about what is meant by spatial reasoning (and why it doesn't just mean geometry).
Spatial reasoning is important - for daily life, Mathematics and the wider curriculum - and research shows there is a positive correlation between spatial ability and mathematical ability - but often there is not a significant focus on spatial reasoning in the Mathematics curriculum. So come along, engage with some spatial thinking and find out a little more about how the two SKTM programmes offered by East Midlands South Maths Hub (primary and early years) could support you in raising the profile of spatial reasoning in school.

This programme focuses on the importance of spatial reasoning within the mathematics curriculum, understanding the properties of shapes and developing geometric reasoning, enhancing opportunities for spatial reasoning and considering links between spatial reasoning and number/calculation.
This Programme is led by Vicki Giffard - Primary Mathematics Consultant. Vicki featured in the latest Maths Hubs Annual Report, you can read more about how Vicki’s experience and passion for maths research enhanced her leadership of this programme, and enabled her to tailor the content for her group by following this link (pages 17 & 18).
