Welcome to our December Secondary and Post-16 Bulletin!

In this edition we share information about our Spring start Professional Development Opportunities including our new SKTM for Secondary Teaching Assistants and our two online A level Work Groups .

You will also find the latest news from the NCETM with their November Secondary Round-up and new web page explaining how trusts can work with their local Maths Hub

It is worth remembering that all our Work Groups, Programmes and Communities are fully funded by the Maths Hubs Programme, so participation is free for all state funded schools.

SKTM Secondary

Early Career Teachers Programme
Applications Open
"It has been very useful to have time to talk about the teaching and learning of maths and begin to think about how I can improve how I present information to students in order to create conceptual understanding"
Participant from the EMS Maths Hub 2022/23 SKTM Secondary Early Career Teachers Programme- Phase 1
This programme is designed to support Secondary Early Career Teachers (teachers in their first two years of teaching).  Early career teachers will work deeply on one area of maths, drawing in associated pedagogy. Activities will include lesson analysis and lesson design.

SKTM Secondary Non-Specialist

Teachers Programme
Applications Open
‘The (Programme) was very well led and I felt I gained a lot of useful insight into Mastery from it alongside some additional subject knowledge and useful pedagogical approaches.’ 
Participant from the EMS Maths Hub 2022/23 SKTM Non-Specialist Teachers Programme
Designed to support non-specialist teachers teaching maths in a secondary school, this programme  and is based on six key themes that participants will explore, supported by an experienced secondary practitioner.

SKTM Secondary Teaching

Assistants Programme
New for 2023/24
This programme is designed to improve the subject knowledge and pedagogical knowledge for all TAs supporting the learning of secondary maths. It is relevant for teaching assistants who work for most of their time with students in the KS3 maths classroom or who lead intervention sessions with groups of students.

Years 5-8 Continuity Work Group
Applications Now Open!
This Work Group aims to strengthen the transition from primary to secondary school. It will focus on deepening knowledge and understanding of the curriculum across KS2 and KS3 and the expectations of pupils at the end of each Key Stage. It will also provide opportunities for collaboration and discussion between primary and secondary colleagues on issues of curriculum and pedagogy.

Supporting Low Attainers to

Achieve a L2 Qualification in

Mathematics Work Group
Applications Now Open!

This is for teachers whose students will study Level 2 maths across secondary and post-16. Teachers of Years 10 and 11, and of post-16 GCSE Maths resit and/or Functional Skills Maths, will develop ways to support students who need to study maths beyond age 16 to achieve a L2 qualification

Work Groups will focus on developing transferable teaching techniques aligned to teaching for mastery. Participants will attend workshops and complete practice-based tasks between sessions.

Developing A Level Pedagogy

Work Group
Applications Now Open!

This Work Group explores and deepens participants' pedagogic content knowledge, empowering teachers to enhance their classroom practice and to influence department-wide A level teaching. It is an engine for improving student understanding of A level Maths, and driving their subsequent success. Participants will design and trial classroom activities, sharing and reflecting on their experiences with others in the Work Group. This year the Work Group will focus on Mechanics pedagogy

Developing  Core Maths Pedagogy

Work Group
Applications Open

This Work Group gives teachers opportunities, through collaboration and experimentation, to develop improved teaching approaches that support the open-ended problem-solving skills Core Maths students need to develop.
