You may have noticed the social media around the club recently regarding Walking Hockey and thought “that’s most of my team mates”. Well it may be, but it’s also a different way to play the game.
We have developed this new initiative & modified format of the game and it has been wonderfully embraced by a wide group of current/former Magpies and people totally new to the game and the club.
We began Walking Hockey in WA on 5th May with our very first session at Stevens Reserve, attended by a group of around ten. And we haven’t missed a week since! Furthermore we have expanded to a second weekly session being held at the new turf facility at Lakelands.
We now have in excess of 50 people on the Walking Hockey database with a consistent group of 25 to 30 playing each week. In addition, Alan Chesney, has been running weekly coaching sessions on a Tuesday morning at Stevens Reserve which have been a major boost to the confidence and ability of some of our newer participants.
During seniors week our Walking Hockey group were involved in two events. Firstly the ‘Have a Go Day’ at Burswood Park, an annual event in it’s 27th year, attracting in excess of 10,000 people annually. This year we represented Walking Hockey with a stall and demonstrations (plus opportunities for members of the general public to have a go).
Despite the high temperatures there were plenty of people picking up a stick for the first time and I thank the Walking Hockey group for their support in attending on the day.
On the Friday, as part of the City of Cockburn seniors week celebrations, our Stevens Reserve group came along to Lakelands and we were joined by 6 to 8 brand-new walking hockey players, all enthused by the experience and promising to come back and play again.
The social and physical benefit to the players of Walking Hockey has been a joy to behold & it’s great to see so many hockey lovers able to continue their association with the game we love. From 8 to 80 and beyond our club and our sport can truly deliver a sport for life.
A huge thanks to my Walking Hockey co-conspirators, Jim Banks and Darrel Bruse, your support and time in the project is invaluable.
Want to play? Join us on Monday’s at Lakelands from 4pm or Friday’s at Stevens Reserve from 9.15am.

CARAMILK NO BAKE SLICE
Ingredients
- 250g packet of Plain Biscuits (Superwines or Arrowroot)
- 3/4 Cup (75g) Desiccated Coconut
- ½ Cup (60g) Coarsely Chopped Walnuts
- 155 grams Caramilk Block (One whole block less one row, save that for topping)
- 100g Butter, cubed
- 395g Can Sweetened Condensed Milk
Chocolate Topping
- 1 Block plus a row of Caramilk Chocolate
- 1 teaspoon Vegetable Oil
Instructions
- Prepare a 25cm square slice dish or baking tin with greaseproof paper (I always give my tin a quick spray with cooking oil then line with paper so it sticks nicely) and set aside.
- Using a food processor roughly crush the biscuits (or pop them in a ziplock bag and bash them a bit with a rolling pin) to a fine crumb
- Roughly chop your walnuts and set aside also.
- In a large saucepan slowly melt together the chocolate, butter and condensed milk, stirring often to ensure it does not catch until butter completely melted and ingredients blended together.
- Allow the mixture to cool slightly, then add to this the crushed biscuits, coconut, walnuts and mix thoroughly.
- Pour mixture into the prepared pan and using the back of a large spoon spread it around and flatten mixture until it is completely smooth and packed tight.
- Put the biscuit base in the fridge to cool for 30 minutes while you prepare the topping
Chocolate Topping
- You can prepare this either on the stove top in a double boiler or in the microwave. Quicker and easier to use microwave.
- Place the chocolate in a medium sized microwave proof bowl
- Heat for 30 second bursts, stirring in between until the chocolate is completely melted and smooth.
- Add the oil to the chocolate and combine welll then pour over the cooled biscuit base. (The Oil is to prevent the topping from cracking!)
- Place back in the fridge for a minimum of 30 minutes to set completely, ideally 4 hours
- Bring the slice to almost room temperature before slicing to ensure it does not crack.
- Slice using a sharp knife & Store in an airtight container until ready to serve.
