UNIQUELY REAL WALKING FOOTBALL
NO RUNNING - NO CONTACT
PROMOTING DUTY OF CARE

As walking football continues to grow world -wide, the WFA are once again being asked to help in various initiatives. These include helping South Korean National television produce a film about how the sport can help Dementia sufferers.

We are also helping ITN and BBC3 in their documentary work.

There are already strong entries into the WFA National Cup,and more clubs continue to affiliate to the WFA.

We have started discussions with the recently formed Walking Football Association in Northern Ireland and we hope that they will be ready to potentially play in the WFA World Cup in 2020.

All this is yet more evidence that we have secured the position of NGB for walking football.in the UK

The sport is also proving popular in Japan, and we are please to welcome the Japanese Federation as an affiliated member of the WFA.

This month we feature the World's largest walking football club. A fantastic success story.

Enjoy

FEATURED CLUB

THE WORLD'S LARGEST WALKING FOOTBALL CLUB.

10 Questions for club founder and England Manager Paul Murtagh.

When did the club start?

We piloted our first walking football sessions in July 2014.

How many members and what sessions are run now?

Starting with just a hardy few we now have over 650 active registered participants, male and female, that attend either regularly or sporadically.
We currently facilitate 20 walking football sessions per week, consisting of over 40, 50, 60, 65 and 70 age ranges including ladies only sessions and our less mobile program.  All sessions are mixed, other than the ladies only sessions and our less mobile program is specially designed to be more accommodating to players with either mobility issues or players suffering from illness, these are also dementia friendly sessions.

Has the growth exceeded expectations?

It has to a degree but I have always been very excited about the potential of the sport. Having seen the life it breathes into people on a regular basis, it’s hardly surprising that it has grown exponentially in such a short space of time.  Few people retire from playing football because they don’t like it anymore, they stop because they may feel that it isn’t appropriate for them or injuries have taken their toll.  Walking football prolongs the active involvement in a sport that most thought had passed them by and everyone loves it.

What marketing do you do?

Other than having a web presence we do no form of marketing,  word of mouth and our ‘open door policy’ seems to keep snowballing people in.  It is our vision to grow the club through inclusion as opposed to ability, subsequently our recreational sessions take priority over the competitive element so there is always scope for people of any ability to play. ‘Walking football for all’ is the key to our rising numbers.

Why did you get into Walking Football?

After taking over an ailing tennis club with a colleague of mine and converting it into a multi-sports club, we looked to fill our vacant daytime slots at the new centre.  We initially saw the Barclays add and after realising it actually wasn’t a joke we decided to trial it, the feedback we had from our first sessions was both rewarding and heart-warming.  I love the ethos behind the game and get a buzz from seeing the enjoyment and fulfilment it brings to so many and that’s what got me hooked.

What is your sporting background?

A keen sportsman in many forms of sport but football was always the favourite, serious knee injury put paid to my playing involvement so I applied myself to the organisation and management of both junior and adult football.  I was able to apply this experience to the organisation of our walking football set up.

What do you see as the challenges for the sport?

There are many challenges ahead but reducing physicality and ‘the running’ are amongst the biggest challenges that need to be addressed. Educating participants and all those involved organising walking football is the way forward.  Increased emphasis on referee training is essential and I would like to see a drive on trying to recruit existing or retired referee’s and for them to be upskilled in WF.  I think that their experience of refereeing and controlling football matches would prove to be invaluable to the sport.  Unification of the rules, so we are all playing by the same set, I imagine would be warmly welcomed by many.
There is also the misconception, from many quarters not involved in WF, of what the game actually is but I feel with the current on-going publicity drive from various organisations and clubs, I’m sure this will be dealt with in time. However, those responsible for creating awareness must be prudent in what and how they are promoting the game.

With the WFA’S expanding and successful Referees Academy, and the WFA “Walk don’t Cheat” campaign amongst the current initiatives, do you see the running issue eventually being eradicated?

I support any initiative to eradicate the scourge of our game but I also understand that it is going to take some time for us to get it right.  A lot of emphasis is correctly placed on the refereeing and any training camps and awareness campaigns are a good start, however, I feel that everyone in the game needs to take responsibility for how it is delivered, from the clubs facilitating it to the players playing.  I’m sure that the vast majority of players stopped for running are not intentionally trying to ‘cheat’ they just need educating and guidance. We also need to accept that we all have to work together on this issue and be patient as it’s going to take some time.  The FA has been in existence for some 155 years and the issue of refereeing is usually the hot topic of debate, up and down the country, every week! Add such an ambiguous judgement call of whether you think its running or walking and you have a more difficult challenge to sort.

As England manager for the 50s team how excited are you with the Euros in June and the World Cup next year?

Obviously I’m extremely looking forward to the tournaments, which represent such a leap forward for WF.  The players are immensely proud and honoured to be representing their country as am I and the rest of the management team in which will be the very first of its kind in this type of international tournament. Obviously, the sport is not all about the best players playing international matches, the hope is that these ventures raise awareness and inspire people to take up the game.  Furthermore, that matches such as these increase the credibility of this relatively young sport.

Where do you see the sport of Walking Football in 5 years’ time?

I think the sport still has enormous potential, the more people that discover the game the more it will grow. I feel that the vast majority of people that try it, love it and that applies to people of all ages.  Doing a form of exercise that people actually enjoy and now have the opportunity to take part in the game that they love will only increase the numbers.  As a result, I think we will see a bigger more established league structure that spans over larger areas.  I think we will see competitive leagues in more varied age groups, including the immergence of younger players in the over 35 and 40 age groups and an increase in the women’s game. The game may morph into slightly different playing formats for the varied ages and even play with different rules but it would all have stemmed from WF.  The popularity will increase not just in this country but in other countries (in some form) and an increase on a more competitive international stage would be exciting.  Professional clubs will take more of a prominent role in the community and competitive side, health organisations and the NHS will link with local WF groups as standard procedure.  The powers that be need to be united so we are all well placed to drive this massive growth forward. Who knows, Olympic sport!?

The futures bright the future is Walking football.

TIME FOR THE CHEATS TO RUN AWAY
WFA CAMPAIGN

The sport is now mature enough to be selective as to its participants.

If you really want to run, you are in the wrong sport.

It may require some time to adapt but players need to understand that this is a very different sport to football and requires both physical and mental discipline.

If this is too difficult for some, then please run off to Veterans soccer.

Referees need to be stronger, and our WFA referees are doing a fantastic educational job, but ultimately it is down to the players to control themselves.

We do not want cheats in our unique wonderful sport, and that is how running needs to be viewed.
Strong words are sometimes the only way to get the message across

Let's all play the game properly as it was created and envisaged by John Croot.

WFA ANNOUNCE PARTNERSHIP WITH CARDIAC SCIENCE

Information for the Walking Football Association on Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs)

Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) kills more people than all other diseases combined. SCA can happen to anyone, at any time, at any age.

Older people, particularly those exerting themselves during exercise are at risk of an SCA. Given that Walking Football is aimed at the over 50’s, the need for participants trained in first aid in general and the availability of a defibrillator is of paramount importance.

An Automated External Defibrillators (AED) is specifically designed for non-medically trained people to use in the case of SCA.

They are easy to use, self-maintaining and will only work if the victim is in SCA. The defibrillator works by delivering an electric shock, through adhesive pads, placed on the person’s chest. This will usually convert the victim’s heart arrhythmia into a normal rhythm and thus is a life-saving device.

Starting cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and early defibrillation is absolutely vital in treating SCA; for every minute defibrillation is delayed, survival falls by 7 to 10%.

In partnership with Cardiac Science, the Walking Football Association is offering its clubs a special offer in respect of purchasing an AED.

The Powerheart G5 AED is a state-of-the art device combining:
  • Simple operation for infrequent minimally trained rescuer.
  • Rigorous self-check regime; daily, weekly and monthly checks pad presence/capability, battery capability and internal circuitry/software.
  • The G5 is built to last with an 8 year warranty and medical grade battery with a four year unconditional replacement guarantee, (we will replace it free of charge if it runs out any time before the four year period).
  • It has a large text screen, that duplicates the voice instructions, making it easy to use in a noisy environment or by hearing impaired rescuers. The text screen also presents key information to the emergency services (number of shocks delivered and rescue time).
  • Variable escalating energy from 95 Joules to 354 Joules.
  • The outer case is a vivid orange to ensure visibility and constant awareness.
  • Robust construction, with a drop test of 1.22 meters and the highest possible IP 55 rating for moisture and dust.
  • Available in both semi-auto or fully automatic operation.

The Powerheart G5 AED can be purchased by walking football clubs at a special price. The package includes the AED, battery, two sets of defibrillation pads, ready kit (containing scissors, CPR mask and gloves) as well as a premium carry case and first aid kit.

For further information please call 0161926000 or sales@cardiacscience.co.uk quoting reference WFA 2018.
