SKTM- Early Years Teachers

Pathways
Applications Now Open!
The Specialist Knowledge for Teaching Mathematics (SKTM) Early Years Teachers programme is designed to improve the subject knowledge for all practitioners teaching and supporting the learning of early maths.

What is involved?

There are two types of SKTM Early Years pathways: Pathway One: Number Patterns and Structures, and Pathway Two: Pattern, Shape, Space and Measures. Each pathway is the equivalent of a four-day programme and has three core elements, three associated pedagogy sessions, and a task to support the transition from theory to practice. There is also a final core unit that aims to review the quality provision.

What are the benefits?
Participants and their pupils will:
  • Pupils will demonstrate a positive attitude towards maths, being willing to have a go, persevere, and share their mathematical ideas.
  • Participants will review the mathematical learning opportunities and pedagogical approaches across our wider provision.
  • Participants will evaluate and enhance the opportunities to promote mathematical learning in all areas of provision.
Who can take part?

These programmes are designed for individuals who would like to develop their specialist knowledge for teaching maths to three- to five-year-olds. This may be particularly relevant for teachers who have moved phases or have not received maths-specific training.

Interested?

Follow the links below for further information, including the dates of the programme and how to apply. Please apply by Friday 7th October 2022.

Mastery Readiness Work Group
Applications Open!
The Mastery Readiness programme is for schools who have a commitment to developing a teaching for mastery approach long term, but who currently need additional support for improving maths teaching, learning and leadership.

What is involved?
Each Work Group will be led by one of the Maths Hub’s Mastery Readiness Leads and involve up to eight primary schools. During the year, they will work closely together to develop subject and pedagogical knowledge as well as supporting teaching, learning and leadership of maths across the school by looking at the Five Big Ideas of Mastery Readiness to lay the foundations to developing teaching for mastery in an effective and sustainable manner.

Who can take part?
There are many reasons why a school may choose to apply for Mastery Readiness but it must include at least one of the following:
  • The school has been judged at RI or Inadequate for at least their most recent Ofsted inspection
  • There is poor progress or attainment data for maths across the school which cannot be solely attributed to the results of Covid disruption
  • It has been identified by their Local Authority or supporting NLE as being suitable for the programme
  • The school serves an area of low social mobility
  • It has been identified that there is a need for additional support for leadership of maths
  • There has been high turnover of staff, meaning that the implementation of sustained change has been difficult but there is now a more stable situation where progress can be made.
Interested?
Further information can be found on our website and the application is linked below. Once completed please return the application form to admin@emsmathshub.org.uk. Please apply before the 20th September 2022.

Years 5-8 Continuity Work Group
What is involved in?

The Work Group design will follow a workshop – school-based work cycle, consisting of several workshops followed in each case by specific school-based work. A lesson study approach is encouraged where all participants focus on a particular aspect of the maths curriculum and work collaboratively to develop this in their schools. Cross-phase classroom observation and discussion of practice is encouraged wherever possible. Participants are expected to consider ways to develop the approaches explored during the project with other staff in their schools.

What are the benefits?
Participants and their schools will:
  • deepen knowledge and understanding of the curriculum across KS2 and KS3 and the expectations of pupils at the end of each Key Stage
  • understand the approaches which will support pupils as they move from KS2 to KS3, including the importance of consistency of language and representations
  • make use of common approaches, representations and language across phases
  • develop collaboration between primary and secondary colleagues on issues of curriculum and pedagogy, making them part of the school’s transition practice (and policy)
Who can take part?

Participants should be teachers of Years 5-8 in primary, secondary, middle school and all-through schools who have some responsibility for curriculum development, e.g. primary school maths leads/secondary heads of department. Linked ‘families’ of schools are encouraged to take part: ideally teachers from two (or more) secondary schools and some of their associated primary schools will work together.

Secondary Teaching for Mastery

Development Work Group
Applications Open!
Teaching for mastery means students gaining a deep and lasting understanding of mathematical procedures and concepts. The Secondary Teaching for Mastery Development Work Group is a funded professional development programme which involves individual teachers and their departments working overtime to embed mastery into maths learning.

What are the benefits?

Participating in the Work Group will provide the following benefits to participant schools:

  • The Work Groups provide an opportunity for your school to engage in high-quality, sustained, collaborative professional development and participate in an important national project.
  • Teachers will collaborate with colleagues from local schools, and get support and guidance from a Local Leader of Maths Education.
  • Participants also take away ideas to help students become more confident mathematicians, ready to tackle GCSEs and A levels, and begin to introduce and embed teaching for mastery.
Who can take part?
Any state-funded secondary school with an interest in developing mathematics teaching for mastery can apply. The school should identify two teachers (Mastery Advocates) who will be best placed to innovate in their own classroom and to lead developmental work across the department.

There is no fee or charge to participating schools to take part in this Work Group. The Maths Hub meets the cost of running the Work Group. Each department will receive £2000 to enable the Mastery Advocates to work with the Secondary Mastery Specialist and thus enable them to work within their own department.

Year 7-11 Coherence Work Group
Applications Now Open!
This project focuses on participant teachers working together to analyse, deconstruct and trace through the curriculum a selected key topic area, developing insight into effective teaching approaches, and considering the implications for longer term curriculum design. The project was previously known as Challenging Topics at GCSE, but its name has been amended to more accurately reflect the work undertaken as well as to convey the importance of curriculum coherence.

What is involved?

The Work Group design will follow a workshop – school-based work cycle, consisting of several workshops followed in each case by specific school-based work. Workshops will provide opportunities for teachers to identify and analyse a key topic area, to work collaboratively to develop pedagogical approaches to it, and to evaluate and discuss after teaching.

What are the benefits?

Participants and their departments will:

  • develop a deeper insight into the maths that underpins learning in a challenging topic, through unpicking and analysing the topic
  • develop a deeper insight into the key issues and misconceptions behind the topic
  • identify misconceptions and plan a series of lessons to support students in the topic area
  • use and evaluate appropriate pedagogies to teach the topic area
  • work with their departments to unpick and analyse topics to inform collaborative planning and development of schemes of work.
Who can take part?

Participants should be secondary school teachers of GCSE Maths. Individuals or ideally pairs of teachers from a department participate, with an expectation that they will work with other members of their department at appropriate points. Schools that have participated in previous years may do so again, as developments often take place over time.
