At the start of this year I sat in front of the TV, fizz in hand, expecting our huge recent cultural achievements to be lauded. After all, the first thing BBC1 showed in 2022 was a poem about Britain — “reflecting the country’s recent achievements”.
“Relish the magnificent things we achieved in 2021!” Ah, like Coldplay hitting No 1 in 14 countries with their new album? No, instead the poem lauded our footballers, runners-up at the Euros; Emma Raducanu, the 19th-best female tennis player; and our Paralympic team, who came second. Well done to all. Have an MBE.
“We saw the return of live events,” went the next line — a hint at culture and, maybe, where they will mention that Dua Lipa’s Levitating
