Select areas in Leeds are being warned of the potential consequences of leaving their bins out past their allocated times.

As of November this year, Leeds City Council have announced that domestic bins which are not taken out or brought back into a resident’s property boundary at the correct times will face huge consequences, including fines of up to £1000.

This notice comes after the council deciding measures needed to be made as they have stated that bins left on the pavement causes hazards for people with sight and mobility difficulties as well as cause issues for push chairs, wheelchairs.

Gush Bambrah, a Waste and Recycling Advisor of Leeds City Council has urged residents to “put their bins out the night before the collection and then back again after the collection” and that “if this isn’t complied with, then penalties can be put into place.”

“We try and engage with people and get an idea of what’s happening and try and help them to understand whats happening and why, then we will send out up to 3 letters which warn people about the fines that could be applied.”

Actions are now actively being taken almost a year and a half after the Public Spaces Protection Order was announced which included not leaving bins out, came into place on 1st July 2020.

This includes warning letters threatening people with fines and prosecutions are now being given to residents on certain streets in Leeds to the people who have failed to comply with the councils requests.

This has caused outrage for residents around the targeted areas as they believe that of these repercussions do not seem fair.

Ben Hughes, who resides on Estcourt Terrace in Headingley has expressed his views on the matter as he had received a letter from the council and believes this is “extremely unnecessary” just because he had forgotten to bring his bin back into the correct place.
