Whitby Abbey

Discover

Yorkshire’s

Heritage

Yorkshire is a county well known for its fine heritage. From the stunning architecture of Gothic and medieval abbeys, to the majestic castles of the Yorkshire Dales, Moors and coast - there is plenty to discover at English Heritage sites across North Yorkshire.

North York Moors

Set deep in a wooded valley in the North York Moors, Rievaulx Abbey is a haven of peace and tranquillity. Wander through its extensive ruins with the audio tour and explore its museum to discover the stories of the abbey and the monks who lived there, before recharging and relaxing in the café. You could also combine your trip to Rievaulx with a visit to the nearby medieval castles at Helmsley and Pickering. To the north, and just off the A19, is Mount Grace Priory, House and Gardens. With three distinct sites in one, you can visit the best-preserved Carthusian priory in England, an Arts and Crafts manor house and 13 acres of rejuvenated gardens. The

house features eclectic interiors, with William Morris designs complementing original medieval and restored 17th-century features. In the gardens you’ll find charming room-like spaces with spectacular planting and year-round interest.

Yorkshire Dales

The Yorkshire Dales are home to some of the country’s most beautiful landscapes and most fascinating historical sites. Middleham Castle, was a favoured royal haunt and the childhood home of Richard III. Its impressive remains dominate the nearby market town of Middleham, and a climb to the top of the keep offers unrivalled views across Wensleydale.

Yorkshire Walks

English Heritage sites make the perfect starting points for walks in the wonderful Yorkshire countryside. Rievaulx Abbey to Hemlsey Castle is good for a gentle stroll. The 2½ mile walk takes in two of our best-loved sites, both set in the beautiful North York Moors. Meanwhile, Filey Brigg to Scarborough Castle is an undulating 9 mile hike along a stunning coastal section of the Cleveland Way. Find out more about these and other walks on by searching “English Heritage walking guides.”

A FOODIE’S PARADISE

North Yorkshire’s produce is worldrenowned, and you’ll find everything from street eats to Michelin-starred delights on the menu. North Yorkshire delicacies

There are a few sweet treats that you simply must try while in the region. Bettys Cafe Tea Room in Harrogate, Northallerton and nearby York and Ilkley are known for their Fat Rascal, a fruited scone with a cheeky almond and cherry face - an Afternoon Tea is a real indulgence too. Traditional bakery Botham’s of Whitby is a must for lemon buns, sweet, sultana-enriched dough topped with lemon icing. It wouldn’t be a visit to the seaside without an ice cream, and The Harbour Bar in Scarborough have been making and selling delicious ices for over 75 years!

Special occasions

North Yorkshire’s chefs are blessed with stunning produce fit for discerning palettes. Celebrity chef Tommy Banks’ revered Michelin-starred restaurant The Black Swan at Oldstead in the Howardian Hills features a tasting menu which is inspired by hyper-local ingredients; also with a Michelin star, The Star Inn at Harome near Helmsley is a firm favourite serving modern Yorkshire cuisine; near Ripon, Grantley Hall’s Michelin-starred chef Shaun Rankin uses the very best of the region’s produce for his sumptuous menus; while at The Angel at Hetton, chef patron Michael Wignall’s modern and technical food resulted in a Michelin star in the 2023 guide.

North Yorkshire on a plate...

Your visit wouldn’t be complete without trying some of these homegrown specialities. Ask anyone, Yorkshire’s cheese is among the best in the world. Head to Botton Creamery’s organic farm near Danby for their Dale End Cheddar,

Mooreland Tomme, Summerfields and Botton Gouda; learn about the famous Wensleydale cheese at the Wensleydale Creamery Experience in Hawes, and watch cheese experts at work; while in Settle, the award-winning Courtyard Dairy’s knowledgeable cheesemongers support regional farms. Discover amazing produce at farm shops, with top tips including Berry’s Cafe & Farm Shop’s variety of delights from local artisans near Swinithwaite, and Town End Farm Shop in Airton for their Yorkshire-themed hampers. It wouldn’t be a visit to the coast without a chippy tea, and seaside gems include Whitby’s Trenchers, the famous Magpie Cafe - a favourite of seafood guru Rick Stein - and The Fisherman’s Wife. Scarborough’s The Lookout On The Pier provides a top notch view with the freshest seafood; or tuck into a fresh catch at the nautical themed Ingham’s Fish Restaurant in Filey.

Malton Food Festival © Richard Ponter

...and in a glass

Wash all that great food down with a top tipple from North Yorkshire’s finest distillers and brewers. Tadcaster is one of the famous brewery towns of the UK, and has given birth to proper Yorkshire beer from the likes of John Smith’s, Yorkshire’s oldest brewery Samuel Smith and the Tower Brewery. There must be something in the sea air, as Whitby is home to the awardwinning Whitby Distillery’s oceaninspired gin and rum collections, and Whitby Brewery’s craft ales, stouts and lagers; while in nearby Filey, The Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery produces an excellent single malt whiskey. In Nidderdale, family-run Whittaker’s Distillery brew up internationally award-winning craft gin, vodka and whiskey.

RHS Garden Harlow Carr, Harrogate

Jonathan Moseley’s favourite gardens Yorkshire-born celebrated floral designer and knowledgeable horticulturalist Jonathan Moseley is widely recognised for his role on the BBC’s Big Allotment Challenge, and regularly appears on ITV’s Love Your Weekend with Alan Titchmarsh. He recommends some of his favourite gardens in the region...

Gorgeous gardens

Discover beautiful natural locations like Thorp Perrow’s spectacular arboretum, which includes five National Plant Collections across 100 acres. Walk amongst champion trees and abundant Newby Hall, Ripon biodiversity at Yorkshire Arboretum, and explore lavish borders, wooded havens and wildflower meadows at RHS Garden Harlow Carr. Ripon’s Himalayan Garden contains the North’s largest collection of rhododendrons, azaleas and magnolias; Rudding Park Kitchen Garden boasts over 500 types of plants including herbs, edible flowers and fruit. Scampston Hall’s Walled Garden is unique and contemporary, and Stillingfleet Lodge Gardens is a beautiful English garden complete with a well-stocked nursery. Newby Hall’s award-winning gardens host regular events including an Autumn Flower Show, and Harrogate’s Spring Flower Show takes place at the Yorkshire Event Centre in April.

The county of North Yorkshire is blessed with some of the most amazing and magical gardens. We really are spoiled for choice with so many magnificent venues to visit, each with its own unique character, charm and atmosphere. Unequivocally the magnificent RHS gardens at Harlow Carr have to feature as one of my favourite spots due to the fact that it is a perfect plant person’s paradise. Famed for its magnificent display of Candelabra Primula and exotic Meconopsis, the view from the stream-side is comparable to a Monet painting. The romantic gardens at Beningbrough Hall offer a riot of country style planting, with frothy lavender and cat mint spilling over the gravel pathways, as fragrant roses ramble over arches and obelisks. This National Trust gem combines the right measure of formality and country charm. For me, the South Cliff Gardens at Scarborough evoke a riot of memories; as a child I marvelled at the cataclysmic colour of vast formal plantings of annual summer bedding contained within the Italian garden. This coastal gem offers the most wonderful rose garden and spectacular viewpoints to admire Britain’s first seaside resort. Oh, and while in Scarborough do take a look at the Japanese-themed gardens at Peasholm Park, awash with unusual mature trees, statues, boating lakes and a magical island. Newby Hall is a garden for any season and the momentous herbaceous border has to feature as one of the best in the country. Cleverly designed as a series of garden rooms, there are so many ideas that can be replicated within one’s own garden. I never fail to be mesmerised by the mystery of a walled garden and the one at Helmsley, overlooked by the majestic ruins of the castle, are steeped in history; dating back to the 1750s, this historic garden is one of my favourite spots for afternoon tea in the fabulous Vine House cafe.

18 NORTH YORKSHIRE VISITOR GUIDE 2024

AS SEEN ON SCREEN

If the villages, landscapes and attractions of North Yorkshire look familiar, that’s probably because this region has long been a star of the silver screen! Film makers and TV production companies have been drawn to the area’s dramatic landscapes, historic castles and stately homes for years, so set-jetters rejoice as many of the locations are easy to access and enjoy.

BLOCKBUSTING LOCATIONS All Creatures Great And Small

North Yorkshire is Herriot country, and as you’d expect from such bucolic natural scenery, both the original 1970s TV series and the new Channel 5 series of All Creatures Great And Small were filmed in and around the Yorkshire Dales where James Alfred ‘Alf’ Wight lived. You’ll recognise locations around Thirsk, Bolton Abbey, Janet’s Foss and Malham Cove, Broughton Hall and Ripon Racecourse, and you can even have a pint in the 13th century Green Dragon Inn in Hardraw, which doubles as The Drovers Inn (The Devonshire in Grassington stands in as the outside of the pub).

Anne Boleyn

This ITV drama starring Jodie Turner-Smith drew on the grand surroundings of Bolton Castle, Castle Howard, Ripley Castle and Fountains Hall at Fountains Abbey for location inspiration.

The Witcher

Hit Netflix fantasy series The Witcher saw Henry Cavill brood his way across a variety of locations, including Fountains Abbey and Plumpton Rocks landscape garden near Harrogate.

Heartbeat

Another much-loved Yorkshire-based TV series, the North York Moors village of Goathland doubles as fictional

Aidensfield, and the surrounding countryside features heavily too.

Phantom Thread

The Oscar winning 2017 film starring Daniel Day Lewis was filmed at various locations along the coast, including Scarborough, Staithes, Robin Hood’s Bay and Whitby.

Harry Potter

Climb aboard the train to Hogwarts at Hogsmeade station, also known as Goathland on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway line. Venture across the limestone pavement of Malham Cove in the Yorkshire Dales, where Hermione and Harry split from Ron in Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows.

STARS OF THE SILVER AND SMALL SCREEN… Thirsk

The popular documentary series The Yorkshire Vet is filmed around Thirsk.

Kettlewell

The Yorkshire Dales village was a filming location for the 2003 Calendar Girls movie starring Helen Mirren, Julie Walters and Celia Imrie.

Castle Howard

Given Castle Howard’s grand facade and stunning interiors, it’s no wonder the venue has featured in period dramas like Bridgerton and Brideshead Revisited.

Castle Howard

Scarborough

The twin bays of Scarborough’s sea front have featured prominently in the 2006 Dad’s Army film, as well as the 2020 psychological horror flick Saint Maud.

Whitby Abbey

Bram Stoker’s vampire found himself at Whitby’s gothic abbey, and many Dracula productions have used the location too, most recently by Mark Gatiss and Stephen Moffat for their creepy 2020 BBC adaptation.

Newby Hall & Gardens

The classic country house near Ripon crops up in several TV shows, including Gentleman Jack, Mansfield Park, Peaky Blinders and Victoria. It’s also hosted the BBC’s Antiques Roadshow.

Inside, discover its fascinating history spanning over 400 years, as well as a programme of changing exhibitions throughout the year. Peaceful hidden spots, a walled tea garden and colourful peacocks can all be found outside.

Spend some time at Beningbrough located between York and Harrogate. The ground-floor architecture and contents tell the story of a country house, while the Reddihough Galleries on the first floor host changing exhibitions of contemporary and traditional art. The garden is made up of traditional herbaceous borders and walled kitchen garden, which have something for every season.

On the coast

Fountains Abbey & Studley Royal Deep within the Skell Valley, 4 miles west of the city of Ripon, lies Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a unique place made of two moments in history, where medieval strength blends with 18th century eccentricity to create a landscape full of secrets, curiosities and breath taking views.

The stunning Yorkshire coast is a favourite with walkers and photographers and it’s easy to see why. Whether you’re looking for relaxation or adventure, family memories or time to yourself, the Yorkshire coast encompasses a world of experiences. The original seaside resort, Scarborough’s twin bays, evocative castle, lovely gardens and traditional attractions will put a smile on everyone’s face; Whitby’s worldrenowned gothic abbey, quirky shopping and fascinating museums make it a must visit; while the lovely village of Filey boasts five miles of glorious golden sand, maritime history and stunning walks. Dotted in between these headline acts are a supporting cast of characterful villages chock-full of winding cobbled streets, fossilfilled cliffs, sweeping bays, unspoilt countryside, independent shops, cafes and restaurants, and much more.

Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to keep them busy; from surfing at Scarborough, cycling and biking through peaceful countryside on the Cinder Track, taking up the challenge to walk the Cleveland Way National Trail, or just relaxing and building sandcastles on awardwinning beaches. A short venture inland reveals the wild and wonderful North York Moors, with its heather-strewn beauty dotted with forests, gardens and opportunities to walk, cycle and even zipline to your heart’s content! Discover the region’s rich maritime heritage and watch history come to life at captivating museums; walk with monks, Vikings, Romans and Victorians at castles, abbeys and grand homes; be inspired by international artists and local craftspeople in galleries and

studios; and indulge your shopaholic side at unique boutiques and innovative independent retailers. Fish and chips should certainly be on the menu, but there’s something for every appetite. Try delights from traditional bakers, smokehouses and ice cream makers, taste the freshest seafood, and keep whistles whetted by artisan distillers and brewers. A year-round destination, cultural gems like Scarborough’s Open Air Theatre and Stephen Joseph Theatre bring amazing acts to the stage; Whitby has a busy festival season encompassing everything from goths to ships; and venues up and down the coast play host to live music, comedy, theatre, food festivals, sporting events and street performances. Stay a while, and you’ll find yourself returning time and time again.

WHITBY

Whitby’s meandering streets and alleyways (known locally as ghauts) make the town a real pleasure to explore. You never know what you’ll find around each corner, from quirky shops and cafes to unusual attractions and the majestic whalebone arch which overlooks the harbour. Build castles in the sand at West Cliff, or take a bracing stroll along the West Pier to the lighthouse. Watch the traditional coble fishing boats come in with the daily catch or take a pleasure cruise with Whitby Coastal Cruises, who run 20-minute trips along the coast to Sandsend. Longer trips offer a chance to spot wildlife including resident seals. There are fewer quintessential Whitby experiences than crabbing. Buy your tools and bait from shops along the harbour (and don’t forget to release the crabs!). There are more watery-themed adventures at Whitby Lifeboat Museum, a Victorian boathouse which displays mementos from famous shipwrecks and

rescues. Another Whitby institution, W. Hamond’s Museum of Whitby Jet tells the fascinating tale of jet from geological formation to jewellery manufacture. Learn the history and stories behind one of our most impressive gemstones made famous by Queen Victoria. When tummies rumble, seek out one of Whitby’s award-winning restaurants. Trenchers is a must-visit for fish and chips; The Magpie Cafe is rightly famous for its fresh seafood chowder; enjoy an unrivalled view over the bay with your chippy tea at The Fisherman’s Wife; and enjoy a delicious menu inspired by the sea at Quayside. Lovely Pannett Park is a green space for all seasons, with beautifully maintained floral displays, a lovingly restored sunken lily pond and play area for the kids. It’s also home to Pannett Art Gallery, where you’ll find an eclectic mix of 19th and 20th century paintings and changing exhibitions.

WHITBY SEA SALT - You’ll probably be shaking some of Whitby’s finest sea salt and their ‘proper’ vinegar on your fish and chips. Stockists include The Whitby Shop, Whitby Wholefoods and Sandgate Seafoods among others.

In an effort to conserve and replenish the area’s lobster stocks, eggs from females caught by the local fishing community will be developed in the hatchery and released back into the wild, while the interactive Whitby Marine Discovery Centre revitalises the iconic fish market.

The emblem of Selby is three swans. The coat of arms originates from when Benedict saw three swans on a lake in Selby, which he took as a sign of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost. GETTING AROUND 91

Newtondale

w

Getting Around North Yorkshire may be England’s largest county, but getting here and getting around is easy. RAIL

There are train stations served by cross-country trains in York, Harrogate, Knaresborough, Northallerton, Malton, Selby, Thirsk, Settle, Skipton, Whitby and Scarborough, with the East Coast Mainline (LNER), Grand Central, TransPennine, Northern Rail and Hull Trains routes some of the most direct. London’s Kings Cross is a mere two hours away from York, making North Yorkshire the perfect break from the city. Sometimes the journey is the best part of a trip; take scenic rail journeys on the heritage North Yorkshire Moors Railway, which calls in at Pickering, Goathland and Grosmont, or enjoy a journey from Cumbria to the Yorkshire Dales on the Settle-Carlisle Railway, which traverses the iconic Ribblehead Viaduct.

BUS

North Yorkshire’s market towns, coastal resorts and natural attractions are easily accessible by bus, making traveling the region an affordable and scenic option.

The North York Moors, Yorkshire Coast and Howardian Hills areas are well served by a variety of operators including Abbots of Leeming (Northallerton-Stokesley via National Park villages); Arriva (northern part of the National Park from MiddlesbroughScarborough via Whitby and the coastal villages); Coastliner 840/843 (Leedscoastal towns via York and Malton); East Yorkshire Buses (ScarboroughHelmsley/Ravenscar); Moorsbus (seasonal within North York Moors National Park); Reliance (York-Helmsley/ Kirkbymoorside); Ryedale Community Transport (serving towns and villages); CastleLine (York-Malton via Castle Howard); York & Country (villages between Malton-Hovingham). The Harrogate Bus Company operates between Harrogate, Ripon and Knaresborough, with connections to the east coast and Yorkshire Dales villages. The DalesBus services connect villages within the Yorkshire Dales National Park (check online for seasonal timetables),

and the community run Little White Bus connects visitors to Upper Wensleydale and Swaledale. Keep up to date with timetables at traveline.info

DRIVING

The A1(M) and A19 are the busiest and quickest routes to North Yorkshire, running through the middle of the county. Other roads of note include the A171, which will take you along the coastal towns and villages; the scenic A64 travels betweven York and the coast; and the A170 skirts the southern end of the North York Moors National Park. In the west, take the A61 between Harrogate and Thirsk; the A59 leads between Harrogate and Skipton; and the A65 along the western edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Electric vehicle charging points are widespread throughout the county. Use zap-map.com to find the point most useful for you.
