Meeting the Needs of Industry

Higher Level Apprenticeships
0300 123 1223 | www.src.ac.uk HLA #Earn While You Learn

Southern Regional College has been liaising with the Department for the Economy (DfE) to address the skills gaps at Level 4 and 5 within various industry sectors in Northern Ireland, thereby creating an alternative route to University.

This development work has evolved into a fit for purpose Higher Level Apprenticeship (HLA) programme with targeted qualifications between Level 4 (HNC equivalent) to Level 8 (PhD equivalent), which meets the needs of business and provides realistic progression routes for the learner.

The HLA programmes are targeted at students who have achieved an academic profile to a Level 3 standard e.g. A-Levels or BTEC Extended Diploma at Level 3. HLAs enable employers to train staff to the level required as well as ensuring that there are people available with strong technical and good employability skills.

As part of the entry criteria onto a HLA programme the apprentice must secure employment therefore adhering to the ‘earn-while-you-learn’ concept. The overall aim of HLAs is to equip those studying with both the theoretical knowledge through the qualification and relevant work experience to be effective in any company.

Benefits of Higher Level Apprenticeships

As a Higher Level Apprentice you can gain the skills that employers need that are relevant to the local economy, therefore improving your prospects of good earnings and sustained employment.

You will also ‘earn while you learn’ and achieve professional-level qualifications without paying higher education tuition fees.

You will be equipped with the skills and knowledge to work more efficiently, productively and with more motivation and confidence. Throughout your course, you will benefit from receiving structured training that is fully supported by a personally-assigned academic mentor from SRC and an industrial mentor in your workplace.

Opportunities are available for you to gain qualifications from Level 4 upwards if you are a new employee or an existing employee in a new job role. Entry requirements will depend on the apprenticeship pathway.

To take part in the Higher-Level Apprenticeship programme you need, as a minimum, to:

• be employed or be about to take up permanent paid employment as an apprentice, or be an existing employee moving to a new job role, with a Northern Ireland based company

• work a minimum of 21 hours per week (which includes time for ‘off-the-job’ training)

• have achieved all necessary entry qualifications determined by the relevant sector

• pass any entry tests specified by the relevant sector

• be the minimum school leaving age in Northern Ireland

Fitzpatrick & Kearney, Chartered Accountants has been providing business solutions for its clients for almost 70 years and have an enviable reputation for quality and professionalism.

We have a long history of training schoolleaver students allowing them to gain Accounting Technician qualifications with Chartered Accountants Ireland, and indeed generally to progress to further advanced accounting qualifications. This process has been streamlined following our involvement with the Southern Regional College and we now annually take students through the Higher Level Apprenticeship (HLA) Level 5 Diploma in Accountancy.

This involves an initial placement with our firm for two years, with day release to the SRC to progress the qualifications. This hybrid module has been very successful as the placement students become employees who while working with our firm, get full practical training on all aspects of accountancy which assists them in the completion of their studies. Typically a placement student will work with accounts preparation, audit, VAT compliance, payroll and completion and submission of tax returns to HMRC in UK and Revenue in ROI.

Our placement students will develop an ability to prioritise work and to deal effectively with clients and fellow professionals. They will develop excellent interpersonal and telecommunication skills, and when they have completed their course they will be qualified Accounting Technicians and will have all the skills to succeed in a financial environment.

We have a 100% pass rate for all our placement students, and all of these students have remained with our firm for some time after qualification, to complete further employment and qualifications.
