Targets: Decent Work and Economic growth depend on global trade and investment flows, which are stimulated by the presence of a reliable assurance and certification system for the digital technologies that are drivers of future growth. The topic of this session links directly to the Industry and Innovation elements of SDG 9, since the establishing of an ecosystem of trustworthiness through good assurance and certification frameworks is necessary for allowing strong innovation and reliable industry growth. SDG 16 is linked to the topic of this session through the element of Strong Institutions, which are strengthened when citizens and organizations can reply on clearly established assurance and certification frameworks.
Description:
The session will discuss the challenges that arise when performing assurance or certification of emerging digital technologies. With increasing use of AI and other emerging digital technologies impacting important areas of social and economic life, legislators and regulatory authorities in societies across the globe are seeking to put in place guidelines and legal safeguards to protect citizens from potential negative consequences. In order to effectively implement these safeguards however it is necessary to put in place not only the regulatory frameworks, but also an ecosystem of assurance and certification that is capable of assessing and communicating the compliance with these guidelines and regulations. This session will focus on the challenges that emerging digital technology pose for ensuring trustworthy assurance and certification practices. Some of the key challenges in this space are: - the rapid development of the technologies - a shortage of skilled professional for delivering the assessments - a lack of internationally recognized assurance and certification standards for these new technologies
The session will feed into ongoing discussions at national and regional bodies regarding the regulation and oversight of digital service provisions. Specific outputs will include follow-up engagements with standards setting bodies in the technical (ISO/IEC, IEEE-SA, CEN-CENELEC) and assurance (ICAEW) communities and the World Economic Forum's Global AI Action Alliance.
Hybrid Format: - Onsite and online speakers and attendee interaction will be facilitated through a structured alternation between Questions and Answers from participants who are onsite and participants who are online. - The session will be structured to minimize reliance on slide presentations (which could be technically challenging to access for all participants). Instead reference materials will be provided through the session listing page prior to the start of the conference. - We do not plan to use any additional online tools/platforms, since these could pose technical challenges for some participants.
