RDGY41170 Paediatric Imaging in Clinical Practice

This module will cover the fundamental aspects of paediatric imaging across all modalities. It aims to equip radiographers with the relevant skills and to develop in-depth knowledge and understanding of specialised paediatric care pathways and their role within them. This course will attract radiographers working either full time or occasionally with paediatric patients. At present, no postgraduate course of this kind is available in Ireland.
The course structure has been specifically designed to accommodate both students and employers through use of e-learning, thus allowing flexibility and autonomous learning to maximise student engagement. Participants gain their clinical experience in their own hospital, which allows for suitable arrangements to be negotiated within individual workplaces in order to apply theory to practice.
Areas covered by the module include consent, considerations within paediatric radiography, developing paediatric patient and parent appropriate information and professional responsibility. It is designed to provide both theoretical and practical development, with a significant emphasis on clinical experience. All subject areas covered have been developed from the needs of the paediatric workforce, where no modality works independently of another. Assessment strategies include a case study presentation on a paediatric patient from clinical practice and an end of trimester assignment where the student must research, develop, implement and evaluate a change in the area of paediatric imaging in their own clinical site. Regardless of where a skill set lies, teamwork is vital and communication with parent and child is everything.

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of the module a student should:

1. Discuss and critically evaluate the appropriateness of a range of imaging techniques in both the clinical and sub speciality settings for paediatric patients.
2. Gain an in depth understanding of how to modify normal technique to accommodate the needs of paediatric patients for a broad spectrum of presentations.
3. Demonstrate a detailed professional knowledge from a radiographers perspective and apply current research and practice into the wider multidisciplinary context.
4. Gather, analyse and critically evaluate information from a wide range of sources related to paediatric imaging and their own professional practice.
5. Apply professional knowledge and problem solving abilities in relation to paediatric patient examination and care.
6. Justify the contribution of paediatric imaging in the overall management of the patient pathway.
7. Develop professional competencies by integrating clinical skills and specialist clinical knowledge with effective communication skills.

Learning Recommendations:

This module has been developed with radiographers in mind and so previous experience of working as a radiographer is essential. Experience of working with paediatric patients is important to allow full benefit from the module to be gained.
