Trying to create a freecycle group #groupname

I have 3 freecycle groups on Yahoo that I have been trying to create a new group at io. I get an error message that the name is not valid. I searched io and there is not a group already with that name, so why can't I create one? I've sent in a help request, but have not heard back yet.  Marilyn

The group name may be used by a group that has not chosen to appear in the publicly accessible list of groups.
Or the name you have chosen may not follow the rues:
  • The Group name must be 34 characters or less and cannot contain spaces, pluses, periods, or underscores. (length verified Mar 8, 2020)
 See Help also:
  1. Note:
  • The name cannot contain spaces, plus signs, slashes, periods, or underscores. (Hyphens are allowed.)
  • It is possible to change this name later but be aware that renaming an existing group has repercussions. (See Renaming groups.)

Thanks but I'm sure the name follows the rules. And it seems odd that a freecycle group would choose to be private..... Seems like I would get an error message that says that name is taken, instead of not valid, if there was already a group with that name. The names I've been trying are.... Freecycle xx xx with xx xx being our location.

So it would be
freecyclesmallvillekansas
or
Freecycle-Smallville-Kansas

Or a version of these, with or without any caps.
No spaces in any versions. No other punctuations.

No spaces are allowed in the group name (email address), only in the group title.

No, there were no spaces when I typed it. Those jumped in there somehow by autocorrect or whatever after I typed it.

I did some more experimenting, and if I put in a name that was already a group, it said "not available". But I was getting "not valid". If I put in exactly the same name but changed "f" to "ph" it created the group. For instance, in trying to name the group "freecyclelouisville", I get "not valid". But when I put in "phreecyclelouisville", it created the group. I put in the description "Freecycle group for Louisville KY" and that was ok.... So it looks like it won't let us use freecycle in the name.... But there are already lots of groups at io with freecycle as part of the name. I can't figure out why I  can't use it.

Glad you found a workaround.

I wonder whether someone already tried to create a group with that name -  freecyclelouisville,  and then abandoned it. Whether the system thinks the name is “taken” when there isn’t actually a group.

Could it be that someone created the group, parked it, and didn't list it publicly?

When I tried a group name that was already taken, I got the error message "not available". But when I tried FreecycleLouisville, and other Freecyclexxxx or xxxxxfreecycle, I got the error message "not valid". That seems to me to be 2 different issues.

Someone else is now having a problem creating a group with Freecycle in the name/email, https://groups.io/g/GroupManagersForum/topic/77694487  As I stated over there, I think it's Freecycle.org that has gummed up the works, so reporting it as a #bug on the beta group may get an explanation.

This from Mark on beta...

Groups.io has received letters from a law firm apparently representing the Freecycle trademark holder in the UK, stating that a particular group with freecycle in the name is infringing on their trademark. I have not yet asked that group to change their name, but I may have to. To head off any new issues, no more groups with freecycle in their name. Note, I have no idea if the demand is legally valid or not.

The above is part of #26539.

Chris

On searching for Freecycle Groups, I see some folks are now using "FreCycle"
