Sharing Philip's offlist reply with valuable website and publications

It really inspires to publish a personal website, should do the same

I find a lot of the AGI I hear about is sill very narrow in a general sense

Maybe Philip's can help us to move on away from narrow AGI
A lot to read!!

Hello Paola,

This topic is discussed somewhat in my thesis and subsequent papers, available via the Publications page at www.talamind.com.

Best,

Paola,

Tala(C)L sentence looks like Link Grammar processed - this is interesting if true.

Alex,

The Tala language follows a dependency grammar approach to English syntax, but the use of dependency grammar is not required by the thesis approach. Other kinds of grammars for English (e.g. Link Grammar) could be explored in future research.

P.S. The TalaMind approach would also support use of other natural languages besides English.

Alex,

P.P.S. Actually, on further study of the description of Link Grammar at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Link_grammar

perhaps the design of Tala presented in Chapter 5 of (Jackson, 2014) already is equivalent or similar to a Link Grammar.  I'd be glad to discuss this further with you offline.

Phil

Phil,

Have you homologized  link grammars with McCord's slot grammars used in Watson. Or is that even an appropriate question?

John,

Thanks for your question. I did not make any statements comparing McCord's Slot Grammars with Link Grammar, so I have not homologized them.

It appears the two approaches describe the elephant of natural language syntax from different perspectives. Tala takes a third approach, described in section 5.3 of (Jackson, 2014), starting with Hudson's dependency syntax for English sentences. Sections 3.4 and 3.5 discuss the theoretical principles and choices of the thesis approach, noting the importance of supporting unconstrained English, and the potential to use other options for representing English syntax in future research.

Best,
Phil Jackson

Phil,

You mentioned the importance of supporting unconstrained English.

For English Q/A over databases there's "Executable English", online with many examples at executable-english.com .

The vocabulary for writing is open, and so to a large extent is the syntax.

The underlying engine is Turing-complete.

Questions that can be asked are open vocabulary and open syntax, period.

I'm happy to report the publication of the Third Edition of my textbook, "Introduction to Artificial Intelligence". This edition includes discussions of deep neural networks, conceptual graphs*, languages of thought, mental models, metacognition, economic prospects, and research toward human-level AI.

Phil Jackson

*I thank John Sowa for reviewing and providing input to the sections on conceptual graphs and ontologies.

Philip. thank you
congratulations-

we all sometimes breach ontology forum policy of not ádvertising materials which cannot be accessed

"=_publicly "=  I think this is this forum policy right?

you may have to give at least a synopsis or a chapter that we can read :-)

Paola, thanks very much for your reply.

I apologize if I have inadvertently breached an Ontolog-Forum policy.

To synopsize, the Third Edition includes 70 pages of new text about "Artificial Intelligence in the 21st Century", plus an 18 page bibliography for the new text, regarding:

1. How to Define Human-Level Intelligence?
2. Theoretical Objections to the Possibility of Human-Level AI
3. Architecture Levels of an Intelligent Agent
4. Machine Learning at the Associative Level - Neural Networks
5. The Archetype Level- Categories
6. The Linguistic Level
7. Conceptual Framework and Conceptual Processes
8. Human-Level Artificial Intelligence
9. The Harvest of Artificial Intelligence
10. How To Learn More About AI

Free excerpts from the new material are available online using the "Nook for Web" and "Look Inside" features at BarnesandNoble.com and Amazon.com, respectively. Much relevant free material is also available via the Publications page at www.talamind.com

Congrats Phil!

Paola, I hope there is an exceptional policy rule: a member of the club has right and even duty report on his/her achievements:-)
