any experience members would like to share, rigging a preventer to the boom?

I have tried several things in the years I have owned Forever Young.

First, I rigged a true preventer with two snatch blocks, one of which has a clam cleat, which I secured on the bow cleat.  The other snatch block I attached to the aft most lower attachment on the boom.  This system works well and is certainly adequate as far as its capacity for heavy loads.  The only issue I had with it is sometimes, more often than I liked, I needed to go up forward to release the clam cleat.  Reversing the blocks so the clam cleat was on the boom kept it out of the range of releasing from the cockpit but also made it unreachable from the boat.

I then toyed with a system of using the preventor on the boom as a whisker pole to hold out the genoa going downwind.  I led the sheet through a snatch block attached to the rail to the winch.  It was effective but took a lot of time to rig and unless it was a very long tack was not worth the effort.  Also, it prevented the use of the main as the boom was so far out that the main would chafe on the rigging.

I then purchased a boom brake which I rigged to the same attachment point as the aft most main sheet block on the bottom of the boom and ran the lines down to snatch blocks attached to the shroud bases on either side and then to the cockpit.  By having lines on both sides of the boat, the brake can be used on a gybe without having to re-rig it each time.  It is not a true preventer but by cranking up the tension on the stern cleat gives a good deal of security when running down wind.  I generally keep it rigged all season with the lines loose when I am not using it.

Each of these methods serves a somewhat different purpose but together add to the versatility of the rig for different sailing conditions.

Thank you for your response, I’m going to try out some ideas - I need to spend some time with the boat - is the perforated toe rail sufficiently strong to attack a line/block for a preventer?

Hi Ernie, love the name of your boat we are Pelican #80 ha haaaaaaa. My setup for the preventer is a boom brake by Walder. Wishard makes one also but I went with the Walder. I hang it from the selden rod kicker by a dyneema loop #1 to prevent ware on the vang metal to metal contact, and also to put a little space between the vang and the brake. I put a Ronstan block on the port shroud contecting point also with a dyneema loop once again to prevent metal to metal ware. I run a line from the starboard shroud connecting point, through the brake to the port Ronstan block then back to the cockpit, under the dodger and use the port cabin top winch to operate the brake. It works well for me and also doubles as a means to use the boom as a span for a flopper stopper when at anchor if needed. This setup to me is the strongest possible arrangement and also negates the problem of lines across the deck to the toerail as possible tripping points.

Thanks Stu, the Great White Pelicans just the last few years summer in Lake Michigan.  Sailing on Green Bay with my son, seeing these magnificent birds inspired the name of our new Catalina.  Appreciate your and Ken's advice & experience -

i don’t have any photos i used 
the a couple of blocks running off the vang and over to a block on the toerail and then to the jam bleat on the port side of the hatch - effective enough for long legs to mexico
