Summary

The aviation industry is turning to carbon offsetting in an attempt to reduce its damaging impact on the climate and through the new CORSIA scheme. However, there is currently an issue with the quality of offsets on the market with no guarantee that they will be effective in tackling climate change.
In this policy insight we recommend that the government establishes a national ‘office for carbon removal’ to regulate the market and give confidence that carbon removal actually works, while demonstrating good practice to the rest of the world. We also highlight the potential value of this funding for nature restoration in the UK, and propose a new Farm and Soil Carbon Code through which farmers and land managers can verify ‘carbon farming’ measures and gain new income from selling high quality carbon credits.
