GMB London Region and T.U.U.T Charitable Trust are proud to be supporting the invaluable work of the Trussell Trust, Fareshare and other organisations and community projects offering meals, food parcels, toiletries, advice and signposting.

Food banks in the London boroughs of Hillingdon, Brent and Newham, and Norwich and Chesham have each received £1,000 to help with the provision of food and toiletries parcels as well as offering or signposting to, debt and benefits advice. GMB reps Luke Simcock, Robert Wheeler, Cathy Hanlon, Jan Smith and Nicola Warr presented the donations on behalf of GMB London Region.

Warren Kenny, GMB London Regional Secretary and a director of TUFM said:

“Between 1 April 2022 to 31st March 2023 the Trussel Trust distributed the most parcels that the network has ever distributed in a financial year, which is a 37 per cent increase from the same period in 2021/22[1]. This is a shocking statistic and you cannot hide from the fact that many of the people seeking help are in work but not earning enough to cover their living costs.

“The Conservative Government’s attack on our employment rights, the mismanagement of the economy, together with the decimation of the welfare benefits system are responsible for a level of food poverty not seen for decades.

“GMB recognises the invaluable contribution made by food banks and the volunteers who give their time to organise the distribution of food and other essentials but the reality is that people should earn a decent wage and we should have a Welfare Benefits System fit for purpose.”
